| Just a couple questions. I'm building a new 308 on the dpms platform. I have everything but the barrel to complete the build. I'm currently looking at the jp barrel kits and was wondering what the opinion was on what I should get. It will mostly be used for bench shooting, but maybe occasionally in some action shooting sports. I'm torn between the 18, 20, and 22 lengths. Also not sure which twist rate I should get the 1:10 or 1:11. I do also do all my own reloading. |

I'd go with either 18" or 20". If it will be mostly for bench shooting then I'd go with 20". There's likely not a huge difference between the two except for barrel contour (weight).
I see on this page the 18" barrels have a "light contour" and the 20" barrel has a "medium contour". Just something to take into consideration. |
| I recently finished an Armalite AR-10 build with a Ranier ultra-match 20" barrel and am very pleased. I just got the barrel broken in on the last range trip so I haven't done serious load testing yet but I had a 5-shot group measure .56" at 100yards which is better than I expected. With my so far limited experience I would recommend one of these. I believe these are machined from Shilen blanks and you can't buy a blank and have it machined for what Ranier charges for the finished product. Another reason I went with this is the relatively light profile (3 pounds). I don't know why people put bull barrels on AR's; they're not bench rest rifles and that heavy gun is not so much fun to lug around and shoot. |
