I just took my Maten out shooting yesterday. I loaded 2 308 shells in a C-Products 10rd mag. I let the bolt ride forward and it stopped about 1/4" shy of fully chambering. Took out the mag and had a hell of a time pulling the bolt back to release the case. I thought at first the case was too big. I put the empty mag in the gun, put a round in the chamber with my finger and let the bolt release. It fired fine. Any time I try and feed the gun from the mag the bolt stops short and I have to really mussle the charge handle back to clear the chamber. If I leave the mag in the gun empty and hand load it shoots like a champ. I just ordered a 10/20 P Mag for it and am going to see if that does anything. Any ideas as to what's happening

factory or hand loaded ammo ?
Hard to extract a live round from the chamber means a tight, rough or dirty chamber or the ammo is too big,
like resizing brass with a small base die may be needed.
With the upper off you should be able to drop a round in by fingers and push the bolt in place by hand.
If the bolt wont lock in with the round and sticks out the back of the upper that 1/4 inch still
then the ammo is over size or its the chamber.
You should be able to drop a round in the chamber and it goes in all the way with ease.

Hand loaded ammo. New Win brass neck sized with a Lee collet die, 168 Nosler CC and a CCI mil primer.  Yes a loaded round is a pain to get out of the chamber if fed by the mag. If I hand feed it the bolt closes fine and shoots great. I put 60 rounds down range this way. When I load from the mag the bolt always stops short. Whan I load again I will use my Forster nat match die just to be sure. I thought for sure the ammo was in need of a little more sizing but shot fine manually.

Fully resize the ammo.  Cam over the press.  I had the same issue with my first loads. Coming from a bolt gun I barely bumped the shoulder, that does not work for an AR.

If I hand feed it the bolt closes fine and shoots great.this is because you pull back the charge handle and let the bolt hammer the oversize brass into the chamber I put 60 rounds down range this way. When I load from the mag the bolt always stops short.this is because the recoil spring is only strong enough to strip a round from the mag and push it in the chamber not hammer it in Whan I load again I will use my Forster nat match die just to be sure. If you have a tighter chamber, even full-length sizing can be a problem, as I experienced with my first DPMS LR-308.  Since then, I only have custom guns chambered by GA Precision because they know how to cut a chamber that feeds in an auto-loader, and is still accurate.  As stated, you must full-length re-size for gas guns.  They don't let the case cool down long enough to return closer to original dimensions, so post-shoot obturation averages much larger than cases run through bolt guns.  The reason is due to primary extraction after the projectile passes the gas port and a lot of pressure is still exerted on the case.

I also pay more attention to the base of my brass just above the extractor groove, taking note of how much larger it is than original dimensions.  With AR's and other gas guns using floating firing pins, you also need to be extremely anal about seating your primers, and watching primer pocket looseness.  Other than that, they run fine with full-length sized brass, and basic loading procedures.  or .308, make sure you don't use once-fired Lake City 7.62 ammo that has been run through machineguns, as they can be significantly weakened above the web near the head from stretching in the chamber under pressure in rapid-fire sessions where chamber heat gets into the captain insano range.  Same goes for SAW's and 5.56 Lake City brass.  I've seen AR15's that had catostrophic failures for this reason, even though the loads and everything else was fine.

I have yet to see an AR10 let go though...the action is extremely well designed and takes pretty impressive abuse.

Interesting point Cornholio1.  That thought did cross my mind but I would have never figured the chamber would be to small for new win brass, that stuff is pretty small. Maybe the chamber is real tight, When I load these rounds the next time I will use my National match die and see if that helps. Thanks much for all your guys input, MERRY CHRISTMAS
