I have plans on building a 7.62x39 AR for hog hunting when i get home from deployment. I was planning on building it from the model1sales kits. Right now I am pretty sure i am goin to get the free floated quad rail on it and the badger extended latch. I am planning on putting a 1-4 scope on it. Now the only thing I am still deciding on is the sight set up. I want buis but since not sure what to go with with this build. I was thinking of goin with a standard FSB and a mattech buis that i have lieing around. What are your oppinions and suggestions?
If you're planning on a 1-4 scope then you'll want to get a folding front sight. I tried a 1-4 power scope on my fixed front sight upper and it created a 'ghost' image of the front tower sight at low power that drove me crazy. At 4x and above the front sight disappears.
Thanks for the quick reply. I was wondering that since i have never shot with magnified optics on a AR. I am on a pretty tight budget for this build. Can you recomend a folding front sight and or a scope base. I was looking at goin with the bushnell banner 1-4 (like i said tight budget)

I like the idea of a folding front sight. I use a red dot and with the red dot and the BUIS co-witnessed.
The other day at the quarry I was shooting at pop cans offhand and kept missing. I poped up my front
sight and found the red dot was out of alignment. It was a simple matter to dial the dot back until it
sat on the front post and I was back in business. I could have done the same with a scope Jack... |
My 1-4 is a Bushnell banner also, I really like it for the $$$ and I'm starting to really appreciate the flexibility. I thought the crosshairs were a little thick when I first mounted it but they're easy to see and the center has much finer hairs for precision shooting, a good 0 to 100 yard scope for cheap. I'm running a Magpul rear flip-up on my AR upper with a fixed sight post and I've been very happy with it, I may add a front & rear Magpul flipup to my other AR upper as well. I mainly went with it because it was light (plastic) and I've always liked Magpul's quality. Troy Ind. also makes some really nice sights if you prefer metal and want to spend more $$$. Just make sure you get the right front sight, some are 'same-plane' sights, they're designed to mount at the same height like a quad rail, while others mount on a railed gas block which is lower than the top rail.
