Similiar ballistics to a 7.62x39. Uses the same mags as a 5.56 ar and same bolt. Only thing that changes is the barrel. |

In your price range I've done well with Model 1 Sales' 7.62x39 uppers. If you go that route check to make sure you get their firing pin optimized for 7.62x39.
I have or have had five 7.62x39 ARs and it's a favorite configuration for me. |

The complete upper I bought at a gun show, so turnaround was not a consideration. I have ordered from them, including another 7.62x39 barrel, and I don't recall becoming annoyed while waiting; i.e., I think the orders have generally shown up in a week or so.
Call 'em rather than order through the website if possible. That way you can ask both about turnaround as well as verify you'll be getting the 7.62x39 firing pin. I live in southeast Texas, so I've never had the gun out in much below 32º weather, but I haven't had problems in that cold. I do keep all my ARs well lubed. |

If you ever plan on owning a suppressor this is the way to go. They are designed to cycle subsonic and supersonic rounds. |
| I have a Black Rifle Arms 7.62x39 Piston Upper that I'm very pleased with. I am using ammo from Aim Surplus, its cheap: Yugoslavian 7.62x39 ammo |

This is just my personal experience. I wanted a x39 really bad so I put one together and went through 26 mags trying to find one that worked. 18 of them were niw. I got 12 of them strait from cproducts fresh and new. Not a single one would function with more then 21 rounds in them. Most were 17-19. I too wanted to hunt with mine and it was built mainly for pigs and deer. After I learned about the .300 I got a barrel and sold everything I had for the x39. I had a ton of reloading stuff already for it! I was set for a while but I just wasnt truely happy with it. I have been extremely happy since Ive changed. There are so many more options for bullets too, and there are a lot more hunting bullets availabe in .308 than .310-.311 Not trying to talk you out of the x39 everybody has to make up their own mind but If you look into the .300 blk thread there is a lot of good stuff to learn there.
edit: somthing to keep in mind too. Are you going to go and plink with this rifle or mainly shoot it every once in a while and mainly hunt with it? I have other AR's that I plink with so I dont mind either the cost for good ammo or the time to reload good rounds. Which is what I highly suggest. Reloading is cheaper and better for all high end hunting or match loads. the .300 is not a plinkin round. |

CProducts definitely became the weak link in the x39 AR chain. I still have mags I'm working through to replace springs in.
The ASC mags have worked wonderfully for me since day 1. Funny thing is they cost less than the CP mags did. Comparing the 2 and knowing the same machines made them tells me CP was trying to get by with cheap springs. I will be replacing the mag springs in my CPs until each runs reliably with 20-25rds. I will be purchasing the 3pak of Wolff AK extra power springs until satisfied. |
