Hey guys, I've been between a .308 AR build and a Savage Model 10 build for a little while. I'm trying to decide, and I figure while going back and forth, I can at least start planning both, since I will mostly likely end up with both. It's a "which one first" kinda thing.

Anyway, I want to be able to use PMAG 20LR mags and a Magpul PRS. Those are my only real preferences. lol

I've been looking at DPMS and RRA, but I really feel like they're too much money for a complete rifle. Let's say my budget is $800, maybe a little more. How would you build something with that money?

Well the PRS is gonna take 300 of your dollars and that leaves you 500 for the rest of the gun? Good luck with that!
I looked in to a 308 build and after all was said and done, buying a complete R-25 was cheaper than trying to put one together. So that's what I did and the after market stuff came later. Including a PRS.
If you put the PRS on hold, you'll have a good start at building one with the 800, but count on easily doubling that dollar amount by the time your done.

$800 including a PRS?  If buying new that might be impossible.  The cheapest route would probably include a lower from either Tactical Machining or Sun Devil (both for around 225-230 when not on sale), DPMS slick side upper unless you want the A3 style then JSE Surplus has them complete with charging handle for $165.  The lower parts kits can be found for under $60 which include the crappy DPMS trigger they are so well known for but a quick trip to Bill will fix that for less than $50.  Then you have your PRS stock which runs around $200, just make sure you get the 308 version.  A2 receiver extension, DPMS 308 rifle buffer and spring all for under $50 from MidwayUSA, then a $50 free float tube from JSE Surplus and then you're at the $800 mark with no barrel, BCG, Gas tube w/pin or gas block.  Honestly if you budget is $800 or under you might want to wait for CMMG's forged 308 rifles.  Other than that . . . pray Sportsman's Warehouse has a crazy deal again but you would still be over your budget once you buy the PRS

Long story short, you need to save up more money

Thanks guys. And the PRS wouldn't be included in the $800.

Well then you could add a $200 DPMS barrel and be back up to the $800 mark.  You still need a BCG, Gas Block, etc.

Really if you are trying to build a budget minded 308 AR rifle your best bet is to buy a complete rifle and then upgrade the stock and trigger.

I've seen the 18 bull and 24 for around $900 complete (Kentucky Gun Club, RRARMS, Gun For All etc) both of which could justify the use of the PRS stock unlike the Sportical or Oracle.  Hope that helps

With the .308 platforms, you'd really be stretching it to build something for less than you can buy a DPMS/Bushmaster/Remington.

+1

You may be best served looking for something used.  I have seen some pretty sweet deals on used 7.62 platforms.

Why do you want the PRS?  It is heavy, why add weight to an already heavy rifle.  I have one on my Noveske but I think I well try a sopmod on it to cut some oz's off.

The RRA does not take Pmags.

The budget can be raised so that I'm not settling. I just wanted to see how low-budget I could get.

I'll probably just end up with an LR-308 and call it a day. I really want PMAG compatibility, though.

Wasn't/isn't Spikes working on a PMAG lower in .308?

If you do decide to build on the cheap.  shop the EE for other's upgrade cast offs.
