Hey guys-

Thinking about going MGI lower rather than dealing with hit or miss C-products magazines..

Can these lowers be used with "off the shelf" uppers or do I have to run a MGI upper as well?

Perhaps you should suggest that you are talking about 7.62x39, so every body is on the same page...

I had an MGI lower with the AK magwell.  It worked great.  You either have to use a MGI upper and bolt carrier or have a standard upper and bolt carrier modified.  I used Paladin Machine to modify mine, and they did a great job.  It is a lot cheaper to go this route, and it is best to use a thick walled upper so that the walls of the receiver aren't too thin after it is milled out.  I had both a DPMS low pro and a Mega Machine Billet upper done.

OK, so I am looking at some modifications to the upper as well.. Do you remember what it ran you to have the standard upper and bolt carrier modified by Paladin?

For me it was $65 for labor plus $8 shipping.  Keep in mind that this was back in Feb. 2010.  Prices may have changed since then.

May be a dumb question, but was it as simple as saying "Hey, I bought the MGI lower, I need my upper and bolt tweaked to fit?" :)

I'm not sure what/where needs to be relieved, so if I go this route (the more I think about it, the more I think I should just buy another AK LOL) I'd like to send it to someone who has been there, done that..

I want to use the ARP guts, haven't decided on an upper yet.

Would a standard upper work with a modified bolt carrier group?

Yep thats how I started my e-mail out.  He told me that he has done a few of these over the years.

Nope.  The upper needs to be milled out on the sides and a little in front to allow for the AK mag to fit.
