Well I want to have another AR based platform rifle..But im stuck between a couple the 7.62x39mm ,308,6.5 or the 6.8

obviously the 7.62 round is the cheapest..
what do you feel is the better alternative rifle caliber with cost of ammo, being able to find that ammo....I will not be hunting with it only shooting targets at my range..

I'd go with .308.  Lot's of different loads available in many different bullet weights and styles, etc.  7.62X39 would be the cheapest ammo to buy off the shelf.  6.8 is a good round, but expensive and hard to find in my area.

Depending on your budget, everything about the .308  platform is more expensive.  With any of your other choices you can at least use a standard AR-15 lower.

What kind of distances do you intend to shoot?

How accurate do you want it to be?

my range is only 200  yards and accuracy is important but im not going to lose sleep over it!!

My 7.62x39 groups 4~5" 10 shot groups at 100 with the absolute cheapest ammo made. I've been able to keep 4 shot groups inside an in, on occasion (luck)

If you don't reload, nothing else even comes close in ammo price. It will do just fine at 200 yards.

Do you think it would be better just to buy a whole 7.62x39mm  rifle or just a upper??? i have noveske lower, i can put a upper on ..

You can save a little money initially by just getting the upper, but eventually it will have its own lower. Even my 22lr upper "grew" its own lower.

But will neEd to replace my buffer because the primer needs a good whack on the 7.62??

My 10.5" holds 4" at 100yds with a 22 year old Aimpoint 2000. I shoot it because I get brass cased Yugo M67 for $0.20/rd and it also runs on a CAR buffer. I also shoot 6.5 Grendel, with a 16" upper, and have a 12" 6.8 upper which is the smoothest recoiling of all of them.  I will be doing some testing with an H2 buffer this Friday on the shorty uppers. I also have a 16" x39 scoped upper which gets little use simply because I love shooting my SBRs more

In am just now considering a 22 upper built off a 7.5" 556 SS barrel with a conversion setup but right now my SBRD is in relapse

I really like shooting this caliber. A little harder recoiling than 556 obviously but worth the investment.

The same buffer will work fine.

I used a barrel and bolt from AR Performance. It is designed to work on surplus primers with a standard firing pin. Pretty much all I shoot in it is the surplus Yugo and a little wolf. Runs like a sewing machine.

Most all your questions on 7.62x39 are answered on the FAQ

Not all 7.62x39 mags work well. I'm using later production Cmags, and they are flawless. From what I've read here the older ones were junk. They recently got bought out, and the new company hasn't started shipping them yet, as far as I know. Once I here a few good reports on the new mags, I'll pick some up. Until thin I'll make do with what I got.

Hope this helps.

If ammo price/availability is your issue, 7.62x39mm or 5.45x39mm.

In all honesty you can probably even hunt whitetail within 150yd with it.

yeah i might go with the 7.62 upper and mags....

If all you are doing is plinking at targets out to 200 yards why not just stick with the 5.56?

Targets don't care what size bullet hits them.

just would like a different caliber and i have some ammo for it..

I would get 308. Surplus ammo is cheap dag or port radway green. With a RRA 308 you will shoot MOA ALL DAY LONG!!I would not get 762x39 or 5.45 leave that in aks. I have a 6.8 that is another tac driver unless  you reload it can be hard to find ammo.I f you are looking for a all around rifle 308 is what you want.

.308 is a completely different gun. Hunting ammo is common, there's some very good target ammo, but regardless, the AR10 platform is $500 more. It's not the same as getting a different upper for an AR15.

With either of the 6.x mm's, ammo will be internet order to get it. Academy has been stocking 6.8, some Cabela locations have had it, check your local stores and don't be surprised nobody does. As far as the Boxmarts are concerned, it's a wildcat round and they don't see it pushing something off the shelf for awhile.

7.62x39 is cheap NOW, no telling what things are like in 5 years. Cheap ammo is 100% military based, and surplus or reject loads. It's not a target or hunting load, and you step right back into traditional commercial pricing to get it. If precision 200 yard target shooting is the goal, not even Wolf 7.62 will do the job. Handloads  in any caliber will shoot circles around it.

X39 case taper is a serious detractor, it requires curved mags to properly feed, and the AR has a straight mag well. The major complaint X39 shooters have with the caliber in the AR is mags - there are none reliable enough for more than shooting at the range. As said, CProducts is out of business, mags are running low on shelves. Buying into the combination right now has it's issues.

For reliable operation and low cost ammo, sticking with 5.56 is about the only effective choice. Doing any other caliber, figure another $250 for reloading equipment, as that is the only way cheap ammo will be had. Get a X39, and you will likely have feeding problems simply because the two don't work together. It's why the AK has no mag well, and uses the mags it does.

The rule is just because it can be done, doesn't mean it should be.

I'm in the same boat.. I really want to stick with 7.62x39 as I have several AK's,, It'd be nice if I could just continue to stock up on that caliber..

The issue that is killing me is the mag's..

I could buy a traditional upper, build it up for 7,62x39 and have to deal with playing the hit or miss game.. So I'm looking at a $150 lower and then buying 10 mags to hope to get 5 good working mags.. That's another $200.. So, I'm looking at $350 just to get in the game..

I can pick up the MGI lower with the AK magwill, it looks like, for $375 and I can use the magazines I have laying around the house and won't have to worry with "hoping for a good one.."

With slightly better ammo you can expect 2 inch groups at 200 yards no problem, ie yugo surplus or golden bear. the yugo runs aboud 16 cents a round from aim surplus.
