Well, I am thinking about building an upper for hunting out here in the inter-mountain west. I will mostly be hunting whitetail or mule deer on family land. Its mostly tree areas near a river for the whitetails, and small draws and washes for mules. Most every shot will be under 300 yards.
What I'm trying to decide is, do I want 6.8 SPC? Or do I want 6.5 Grendel? I'm on a tight budget so this will take 6 months to a year to build up the funds to buy the parts for assemblage. Pros and Cons of each? How many of you use either caliber for hunting? Sure, I would love to build one in .260, but that's a whole 'nother can o worms :) |

If it really is a 300 yard max hunting gun I'd do 6.8 if for no other reason than its more common than 6.5. If you have a desire to do long range target work I'd switch to 6.5 because its "as good" as the 6.8 for hunting distances and better than most at long range.
But really you could get a complete rifle and optic for under 500 if you did something silly like get a bolt action Savage with a Vortex on it. And you could get it in a 260 too most likely. Yes yes, not the AR platform I know..... ETA: I also wouldnt use either beyond 300 for hunting. I'd step up to that 260 or some other full sized caliber. |

Weigh your options (or whats important to YOU) and pick the one that you feel suits your criteria best. Hunting wise, either ctg will drop the animals listed, dead is dead with either one. |
