How much does 6.8 drop...better said: at how many yards does a heavier bullet for hogs let's say start to plummet rapidly?  Got a buddy thinkin about getting it for hunting and is wondering what kind of practical range he might have stalking w/o getting a real accurate laser range of the animal like you need when the trajectory gets real steep.

How does this compare to 75 gn 556 ammo?

The 6.8 spc is a good 300-350 yard hunting rifle. Beats the 223 by a mile.

I would not go to a heavier bullet for hogs.

I would just use the 95 gr barnes TTSX bullet.
It will pass through just as well as a 130 gr jacketed bullet, but with more speed out of the barrel.
A real sledge hammer.

We have a mini 14 with an 18" barrel and I have it loaded to 2800 fps. It is a spec I chamber 10 twist.
You can get more out of the 6.8 with a spcII chamber and slow twist barrel.

Zero at 200 yards - 2280 fps 1100 FPE, perfect for hogs.
Max ht 1.8" at 125 yds

-8.5 at 300 yards - 2030 fps 875 FPE
-25   at 400 yards - 1800 fps 690 FPE

The minimum opening speed for the 95 gr TTSX is 1600 fps.

What velocity do you have the 75gr BTHP running at and I can add it as a reference and you can see the difference in the two ballistics.

Any other info you can add about your shooting conditions will make it more exact like Temp, Altitude, sight height(listed is for a Larue mount on an AR), target size, ect.

What length barrel is the .223 your using, Hornady list 2790 for a 24" barrel but a 16" barrel is appx 8.5% slower so 2553 fps would be closer for comparison.

The dotted line in blue is the 75gr BTHP at 2553 fps.

Kewl. What is a FPE of those two rounds at 400 yds?

Myt bbl is 16".

If I could do it all over I would get a sbr w a 9" 300 blkout and a 16" N4 lite upper. There is less and less. Reason to own a 5.56 rifle in semi auto.  But I'm still not ready to switch my main rifle to 6.x.

At 400 yards the 95gr 6.8 has 25.12" of drop and 651.9 FPE and the 75gr .223 has 28.27" of drop and 517.5 FPE.

I have no knowledge of the 6.8 but there is a free program called point blank. You can download it and that will give you tragectory and a ton of other info. It is a good place to start for figuring a zero for a specific load and gets you very close. There is no substitute for range time though. It comes with a very good bullet data base.
