How much does 6.8 drop...better said: at how many yards does a heavier bullet for hogs let's say start to plummet rapidly? Got a buddy thinkin about getting it for hunting and is wondering what kind of practical range he might have stalking w/o getting a real accurate laser range of the animal like you need when the trajectory gets real steep.
How does this compare to 75 gn 556 ammo? |

The 6.8 spc is a good 300-350 yard hunting rifle. Beats the 223 by a mile.
I would not go to a heavier bullet for hogs. I would just use the 95 gr barnes TTSX bullet. It will pass through just as well as a 130 gr jacketed bullet, but with more speed out of the barrel. A real sledge hammer. We have a mini 14 with an 18" barrel and I have it loaded to 2800 fps. It is a spec I chamber 10 twist. You can get more out of the 6.8 with a spcII chamber and slow twist barrel. Zero at 200 yards - 2280 fps 1100 FPE, perfect for hogs. Max ht 1.8" at 125 yds -8.5 at 300 yards - 2030 fps 875 FPE -25 at 400 yards - 1800 fps 690 FPE The minimum opening speed for the 95 gr TTSX is 1600 fps. |

Kewl. What is a FPE of those two rounds at 400 yds?
Myt bbl is 16". If I could do it all over I would get a sbr w a 9" 300 blkout and a 16" N4 lite upper. There is less and less. Reason to own a 5.56 rifle in semi auto. But I'm still not ready to switch my main rifle to 6.x. |
| I have no knowledge of the 6.8 but there is a free program called point blank. You can download it and that will give you tragectory and a ton of other info. It is a good place to start for figuring a zero for a specific load and gets you very close. There is no substitute for range time though. It comes with a very good bullet data base. |
