| Some of you here might be aware of the problems I've been having with this gun. It's been back to the factory once for problems and the jamming troubles are fixed. But I'm having severe problems getting the gun to print a decent group. You can see my targets here: Targets Now then, I've tried different combos, I've bought Black Hills ammo in two different flavors and I still can't get the gun to print a decent group. About the only thing I haven't changed is powders. And I don't think a powder change is going to shrink a 3" to 4" group into a 1" group. This gun is totally unpredictable from one day to the next. So I'm thinking about another barrel. What would be a good barrel to try on this gun? |

So I'm thinking about another barrel. What would be a good barrel to try on this gun? Mine was the same. DPMS replaced my barrel, said it was a bad one. My best group at 100yrds was about 4". It shot a nice 1 and 3/8" 5 shot group at 217yrds last weekend with the new barrel. |

Well , you may want to start with the simple stuff first . I see your a hand loader , as you said ,try different powders & primers , bullets & bullet weights . Cartridge OAL, Taper crimp, & so on .That's the beauty of hand loading , you have so much to chose from.
You said it was back to the factory , is the barrel nut tight . Is that a one piece hand guard /nut type hand guard . What is the trigger like ? A good trigger system can make all the difference in world , with the shooter.( & grouping ) And yes, some bbl.s are not good shooters. |

You got a bad barrel. So did I. So did other guys. It is not uncommon. Plenty of posts about them in the archives. Mine grouped 6" with Black Hills, and had rough gouges inside the chamber that would cause frequent FTE.
If Black Hills ammo and a proven shooter can't do better than 4", it is time for a new barrel. Try your luck with the DPMS customer service crapshoot. I believe the last guy had to pay shipping out of his own pocket, and waited months. |
| Actually, when I sent it back, accuracy was also problem. Trust me, these groups are better. But they're still crappy and and unpredictable to boot. Like when I fire the first shot on a cold barrel and it ends up 4” away from the “group” this gun prints. There are times the first three shots could be covered by a quarter and then the next 7 shots are in a different area. You can't set a scope with a gun like this. That's why I'm asking about a good replacement barrel. I'm wasting a lot of time and money on reloads trying to find a decent group that quite honestly, I don't think the gun will do. Repeatedly. |
| I don't know what you are using for sights but you could have a bad scope. It isn't at all uncommon to have a scope where the retical moves around. 4 moa isn't even much, a scope could drift around much worse than that. If you have another scope (or red dot if that is what you are using) then give it a try. |
| Its the same scope I had on it before I sent it in. Nikon Monarch UCC in a 6.5x20 power. Its not the scope. I've been down this road for a long time now with this gun. Who makes a good replacment barrel for it? Or do I need to send the upper out to somebody that can replace and tune it to at least shoot factory ammo with a decent group? |

Ditch the factory mags and give the Magpul magazines a go. They fixed my functioning issues with my frigging DPMS.
I polished the chamber of my rifle with a flex hone and it solved my ejection/extraction problems. You will have to remove the barrel regardless if you are going to replace it, so remove the handguards and gas tube and see if the barrel is torqued to the receiver properly. You may consider a Tubb final finish kit. They are coated bullets of various grit and they should smooth out the barrel somewhat. When you clean your rifle do you notice that the patches come out bright green? Your bore could be especially rough and it could be copper fouled to some degree. Try some JB bore paste followed by a solid Sweets 7.62 bath. If the barrel strips copper then you are going to have a hell of a time getting repeatable accuracy out of it. Inspect the crown of your barrel and consider recutting it. At this stage you are a probably polishing a turd, but at least you will have the satisfaction of trying all the possible steps before you swallow the cost of a new barrel. One relatively inexpensive barrel is here: http://shop.si-defense.com/Barrels_s/49.htm Best of luck, I feel your pain. ETA: Adco firearms did some barrel work for me and they are great to work with. Fast turnaround and reasonable price. They could set you up pretty quick if you don't want to do the gunsmithing yourself. |

The last test was with 60 rounds and I got zero copper out of it as far as I could tell with the ammonia based cleaner that I use. The upper is going to Krieger. I'm done with it. Sometimes you just have to punt! I am sure you will enjoy your rig when it returns. Please post a range report if possible. |
