I am not sure where this goes. I am looking for the advantages and disadvantages of a 308 and 5.56. I own a 5.56 and I really want to do another build. I am thinking about a 308 build. what are the pros and cons. I plan on reloading for the 308.what do you think?

i think this would be better suited in the AR Variants forum.

This is WAAAY to broad of a subject for AR Discussion.

You'd probably have better luck in the Variants forum

I'm building a .308 on a Mega MA-TEN upper/lower combo right now.  I want another caliber/platform to enjoy.   I've got a varmint and a competition AR already, so I'm not real interested in another 5.56/223.   I'd say the advantages of a 5.56/223 are WAY more choice in opitions, less recoil,  and cheaper ammo.  But, there's just something about a 30 caliber AR style weapon that's got me hooked.

thanks, how do you like the Ma-ten. I think that is the best deal going for a 308 AR. I have been looking for a while and there doesnt seem to be much out there for deals.

I just took my DPMS-SASS .308 out today to break-in the barrel, and I'm already hooked.  I love the .308 - not sure why, but I just do.  It just feels like more of a gun - if that makes any sense. I used factory ammo for the break-in, but, I load .223 and .308 so I'm looking forward to developing a pet load for this one. Cautiously of course. Go for the .308 - it'll be a nice change of pace for you. IMHO.

I want to do a MA-TEN in 6.5 Creedmoore. That would just be tits.

Then again, you could just dump $5000+ on an SR25EMC

I have one on each, a 5.56 frankenrifle I built and a DPMS in .308. The 5.56 would be the choice for something I was going to have to carry all day or for lets say indoor work. For some guality time at the bench I like the .308 better. My .308 is a 24" heavy barrel and with a scope and full mag it's close to 15 pounds. Good solid rifle for benchrest, better than MOA when I do my part, and comfortable enough to shoot for long periods.

You mentioned reloading, try something in the 168 grain range. Most of the .308 guys here seem to have the best luck there. Mine will shoot a decent group with a 150 grain load but I see more flyers. With 168 grain AMAX or Sierra Match Kings it's pretty easy to put three shots touching at 100 yards. I almost always open the group up after that though. I know it's me not the rig cause I see the same thing with my 700.

My thought is a fella needs at least one of each!

I don't understand how your form 1 could come back so quickly for a 13" build... explain? pistol .308?
