Has anyone built and/or just shoot an AR-15 Upper in 243 Winchester Super Short Magnum (WSSM) or the 25 WSSM ? I would like to know what the recoil is like, what size groups it shoots and with what ammo. Thanks.

I just picked up a Oly GameStalker 243wssm, so far I got about 50rds threw it with no issues. I have been useing the 95gr silver tips and with just useing my rifle case as a rest I was holding 1moa or so. With a better range setup I believe it would be under 1moa with the ammo not to mention I decided to warm up with a 45-70 that day so I cant comment on the 243wssm recoil other than it felt better the the 45-70 . Also dont waste the money on the extra mags since they are just modified Promags at a premium price. There is some instructions on the web if you search for a pmag to be modified for the WSSM that seems pretty easy and straight forward.

The brass is so hard you cant read it if you handload. That's probably got more to do with the almost straight walled case. Aside from the fact that pressure guessing based on brass appearance is about as accurate as reading some bones thrown on the floor. With a modern 60k+ psi cartridge with almost no taper in a tight chamber I can't imagine how high you'd have to overpressure before you started to see "pressure signs" This is why you leave the bad habit of pressure guessing in the past and go with published data paying close attention to what your chrony is telling you. Also the claim of not getting 25/06 speeds assumes that 25/06 does everything the manuals claim. Which is something the cartridge is notorious for not doing. |
| For more info and facts about the WSSM calibers and use in the AR-15 go too the WSSM Zone forum web site and read. There is alot of very useful info there as that is what the web site is for. I personally have a 223 & 243 WSSM AR-15's. These are 2 of my most prized shooters and have became my primary varmint guns. It is just extremely hard brass with very thick necks..
You wont see and swipe marks, brass flow or case head expansion. What will happen at overpressure is either the primer will just fall out or the action will lock. Don't believe me just go load some up and you will see what I mean. Published data out of a load manual is a good starting point but max loads are different for every rifle. I hit max well before the published max data with a 25 WSSM Its a decent cartridge for what it will do but I did not care for it. Quoted:

That's the most ridiculous comment I have read in a while.
Good luck. Aside from the fact that pressure guessing based on brass appearance is about as accurate as reading some bones thrown on the floor. | I own and shoot 2 WSSM's and am an advanced reloader. I use both my WSSM's on mostly pasture poodles or yotes. I've found that if you anneal your new brass or your once fired brass that it'll solve alot of your case problems. The MAX loads listed in loading manuals are listed as MAX for a reason. Where ppl get into trouble is when they try to make a cartridge do something it it's not designed to do. Error on the side of caution. The alternative isn't a pretty sight. If you have any particular ?'s about loading this case feel free to im me and i'll do my best to answer you or point you where you can get the correct answer. |
