Hey Guys,

I'm looking to ditch the factory sight gas block so it's not in the way of my monster scope. First question is what diameter block do I need. Has anyone used an adjustable gas block on this platform and if so what did you think (also size/make)?

I'll probably stick with the type I can mount a flip up site on if that helps at all?

Thanks,

BB

Check this out. I had the same weapon and this is the one I used and it worked fine.

Well, that would work but I'm curious about the adjustable type as well. If I can lessen the kick a little that would be great. I'm not shooting subsonic rounds or anything so I'm sure I could use less pressure to run it.

I am pretty sure the barrel is .750 inch at the gas block.  My .338 Federal barrel is so unless it is a bull barrel I'd go with .750.  PRI makes a dandy little adjustable gas block and while the JP is huge, you can get it without a rail and it works just as well.  Depending on what size you want, there are several gas blocks that are adjustable on the market with JP and PRI being my favorites.  I like the JP because it clamps on but the PRI is much smaller.
I am not real certain about how much kick you are going to reduce it by running the gas right on the edge of operation.  Before I went with the expense of an adjustable gas block I would seek out other solutions such as a stronger recoil spring or a heavier buffer.  I needed to adjust the timing on my .500 Phantom and needed to increase the weight of the buffer (rifle) so I took out the standard slug weights in the buffer and put in heavy tungsten power from, who else, Tungsten Heavy Powder.com.  At $40 a pound you will have enough to convert several buffers over to what ever weight you want, sort of like the Spikes Tactical tungsten powdered buffers.

So... nobody has used an adjustable gas block or experimented with one? So, it's a normal .750 gas block like any M4?

The AP4 does not have parkering under the gas block and it is .750".  I have replaced mine with an adjustable GB from PRI but really the only benefit is to under gas when you shoot suppressed.  I have a friend that has a can - it is nice to have.

As for replacements - I know that DPMS has a larger low profile block that will cover the exposed metal.  I just duracoated mine when I painted the rifle.

Realistically,  you don't actually need to do anything.  Once you get above 4x the FSB disappears in the scope.  I would get your glass mounted and then decide what to do based on your sight picture.  Once you begin taking off functioning parts like the FSB you run the risk of voiding your warranty.
