I wan to get a .308. Range from 10m out to200m. AR platform or SOCOM?
I have Remington 700's and several AR's I need some mid range .308.

Have heard some negatives about the M1 and SOCOM.

Any thougts?

I hear that the M1A platform doesn't do well with a 16" barrel. Several owners that I know have complained about frequent cycling issues, but it could be nothing.
I would still go with the AR platform. Partially because I think the carbine length .308 AR has been a little more developed and proven than a carbine length M1A, but mostly I just love ARs.

If I was you I would go with an AR pattern in 7.62x51. The reason I say this is the AR pattern is optics friendly and has more features that you can customize to your liking. With the M1A you will find that putting optics on it is somewhat limited. The AR pattern is going to be more accurate out of the box as well in my experience. Not that I don't love my M1A but my AP4 out shoots it. YMMV

My choice and the range report.

All my Ar's are Bushy. Not sure about their .308.
LaRue would be nice. $$$

I'm set on an AR now. Iv'e heard the same about the SOCOM having some issues.

So time to settle in and do some research. Doing a bit of training this summer and I'm sure i can get plenty of info from that.

i sold my Scout for a SOCOM, i've sold my SOCOM for the new LMT MWS. don't get me wrong, i like shooting M14 style weapons but the AR type 7.62x51's are more versatile. i never had an issue with my SOCOM. i fed it a lot of different surplus ammo and not only was it acceptably accurate but it ran flawlessly.

my choice was geared toward one that was KAC pattern. this is what i believe will become the main standard for AR-10 type weapons. the U.S. has adopted the M110 and it's not likely to go anywhere anytime soon. the Brits have adopted the MWS (and according to an email from LMT today, they're ordering a bunch more). the actual Armalite AR-10 pattern will be a distant second, IMHO.

in no particular order: KAC, LMT, LaRue & LWRCi would be among MY  top choices. let's not forget that you can get PMags for these pattern rifles too.

KAC is outside my checkbook.
I have no history with LMT so more reading in order.
Everything I have ever purchased from LaRue has not failed me.

A Bushy .308 doesn't do it for me either.

I need some trigger time with one to be sure.

mine too.

THIS  thread would be a good start on the LMT option.

a good friend of mine just picked up a LaRue. range reports will begin when he decides on glass for it.

i chose LMT because of the success i've had with everything else LMT. + the MRP will allow a quick change barrel option, this will come in handy later down the road as more barrels become available. when the 18" barrels come out that's the route i'm going then i'll have the 16" barrel cut back or just order a factory 12.5" if they offer one.

LMT's email today confirmed that i'm going to be waiting just a bit longer to get mine. i'm ok with that since the Brits are using them to whack bad guys, that's more than i'm going to do with it.
