| I'm considering getting a 6.5 grendel or sporter upper and am wondering with the shortage of available ammo how accurate formed brass from 7.62x39 is without firing it first? I have plenty of x39 brass and am a reloader but don't want to fire them all first to get decent results unless I have to. I'd like to hear what anyone's results were who tried this. |

Case capacity is decreased until after the first fire. Otherwise, it functions find and shoots great. No worries. Just run x39 brass through the die and fill er up. |

I haven't done it, yet, but I've read several reports for forum members, both here and other fora, that the result is quite accurate and will suffice for a day of informal target shooting at the range. Then, at the end of the day, you have all that nice fire formed brass.

I'm considering this because I can buy Lapua 7.62x39 for almost 40% less than 6.5G brass. Seems absurd to have such a huge price differential from one maker when the case is so close to the same dimensions and takes the same number of steps to make. But, that's the way it is. |

Preach it, bro! When using 7.62x39 reformed brass, I think it's recommended to always load 1 less grain powder than any comparable 6.5 Grendel recipe, on the assumption the interior volume is also less. John | 6.5 Grendel: The Tier One AR Cartridge. | www.65grendel.com |

Yup, x39 brass has worked great for me to fireform. I use a mild load in the 6.5G anyways so don't change anything other than I fireform using remington 120gr bullets as they are cheaper. I have a TON of x39 brass so if I want to, I load up some fireform loads and go run 'em through for fun. Then I resize again with 6.5G die and clean it all up and store it just in case I need it. I prefer using the 6.5G Lapua brass and I have a bunch of it, so the x39 brass is just in case. Of course, now with 2million pcs of Hornady brass hitting the market, it shouldn't be such an issue! |

How mild do you load down for the first time? Do the cases get sooty from not being powered enough and how is the accuracy? If I could get 2 moa at 100 yards w/ open sightsfor the first firing I would probably go ahead and order an upper!

I get about the same groupings (1" or so) with the Remingtons when fireforming as I do with the SMK's and the Amax's in new Lapua cases!! Blew me away as I thought point of impact would be off and such, but it wasn't. When I say mine are not fast, it is because when I first started loading for my 6.5Grendel all I had even close to appropriate for the 6.5 was IMR4320. It only runs about 2200fps, but is super accurate for me at 100yds but even better at 150yds! Next I am going to try the 108gr bullets as that is reported to be just the balls with the 6.5G/264LBC. Fast, low pressure, accurate. I need a good trigger too. If you put a 20x scope on her you can watch bullets impact as the recoil is so mild. I love shooting the 6.5. My daughter shot it this summer and she was 6 (she's 7 now and convinced she can handle the .50Beo. HAHAHA!).
Whether you get a 6.5Grendel or a 264LBC, it's all good and there will only be more ammo and brass available in the next few months now that financially backed LB is ripping up the AR arena! |

I necked down some range brass 7.62 w/o a hitch. Shot some 95gr VMax's over a light load of 25gr of X-Term w/ a Remington 7-1/2 Mag primer. Cycled my 16" 6.5 just fine..........of course my middy is running a Adams Arms w/ bolt carrier too I also hydro-formed some too. It works great and I can then load to usual recipes................Big thanks to Chopper! EDIT–– What's not to like about free brass that others just throw away at the range?..............I'll use your 7.62 brass, I'll even pay the shipping, just send it to me!!! |
