Ive been doing some research on alexanderarms.com, but i have a few questions:

From what i understand the 6.5 grendel is one of the most accurate and longer distance
rounds shot out of the AR platform, if i have a Rifle lower can i make a Grendel upper
and just throw it on with out having to modify the lower??

Is the ammo affordable and easy to obtain??

Are those that have built and shot this round happy with its preformance??

Thanks guys

Ammo can be hard to come by.  Check out MIDWAYUSA for average ammo prices (you will find the ammo is not in stock there).  You an slap the upper onto a standard AR 5 lower.  I love mine (AA16" upper).  If I could do it over again, I'd get at least an 18" upper.  Ive shot a few hogs and a couple of deer excellent results (all shots short of 100 yards).  Enjoy.

A Grendel upper will fit on a standard lower.  You will need new magazines, currently available from AA and CProducts.  Other than that you will need a barrel and bolt and your ready to go.

Grendel brass will run you between $0.65 and $1.04 a piece.  Brass can require some searching of Cabelas & other online retailers, but can usually be found in stock somewhere.  Hornady has announced that they will be producing brass, loaded ammo and dies for the Grendel, but I don't believe it has hit the market yet.  You also have the option of fire/hydro forming 7.62x39 brass in the Grendel, but I think you loose a little bit of case capacity.

I've got two 6.5G builds a 20" and a 24", and I'm happy with both of them.

Good luck with your decision!

I have a 24", and  have a 16" barrel on order for a piston build.  Fire forming is easy, I picked up 2M rounds of IMI 7.62x39 brass and use slightly reduced loads, finding them quite accurate using I think 129 gr Rem bullets( I am not home so cannot be sure).  The proper fireforming load will cycle the action and eject brass fine.  I initally had problems which were cured by making sure case was fully sized ( cam over press handle) and seating  bullets deep enough to ensure reliable chamering.  I had a couple of range sessions that were frustrating, but got the kinks worked out.  I also went ahead and put in a good supply of AA and Lapua brass so have no worries as to availability for a long time too come.

Would I do it again, yes!  It's a neat little cartridge, easy on the shoulder and has a lot of potential for long range shooting if I can find a place where I can do that.

Check out this thread: 6.8SPC or 6.5G?

It covers the merits of both the 6.5 and 6.8.  I found it very informative.  It helped me decide on 6.8 because of the performance out of shorter barrels.  If you want primarily long range, sounds like the 6.5 would be the choice for you.  Good luck!
