 I am considering a .338 Federal upper for my DPMS compatible lower. Anyone have any hunting or target experience with this caliber in an AR platform? Ballistics and performance of .338 Fed. looks very sensible to me. I like the lower chamber pressures and reduced recoil with plenty of whallop for big game like elk.
I am a reloader, so ammo is possible for me to make from plentiful .308 brass. |

I've taken two deer with my AR-338 this year already. It is amazing how deadly it is ... if you look at the velocities it is actually capable of velocities that the 308 cannot achieve. If you use a 160g bullet or 180g bullet and compare it with a .308 Winchester using the same weight ... you will get 100-150fps more at the muzzle. I personally shoot a 225g round that I loaded in some resized .308 cases ... it is absolutely amazing the amount of energy difference between the two. The buck I shot with it two weeks ago didn't even blink when it hit ... it dropped like a rock. The other doe I shot at 185 yards with unbelievable devastation ... the exit wound was enormous. I was also impressed with it's ballistics. It is just as good as long ranges as my .308 rifles.

Shot an antelope with a 22" 338 Federal AR-10 two seasons ago. It was quartering towards me, and I shot just behind the shoulder to hit vitals and it traversed the whole body and popped out just above the right hip. You can see the exit right above the rear scope ring in the picture below:  |

I like the cartridge so much that I am having Pac-Nor install a 339 Fed barrel on a Rem700 action. It made more sense for me because the AR-10 shown above was in the 12+lbs range when loaded. I intend to go elk hunting with the 338 Fed round, so I wanted something lighter. As a stand, or blind gun the 338 Fed AR variants would be badass out to at least 300yds. |
