So I get back from Afghanistan (4th deployment the the desert) and I decied to treat myself to a fancy upper for the 7.62. After alot of research I decied on GA Precision. I went all out, DD free floater, vortex, extended charge handle, and top o' the line barrel. I paid a crazy $1,800 for this thing! After waiting about a year, I finally get it from UPS. The first thing that hits me is the Vortex is missing. OK.
I clean and lube, load a factory mag w 3 rds (M118) and settle in prone supported. I live in the country and have a 800m shooting range in the back yard. 1st round, no problem, and then I get a failure to lock the bolt back on the empty mag. OK. I clean the barrel, reload, fire again, same. So I have my son shoot it and I watch the ejection port. The bolt isnt comming back far enough to lock. Great, I figure the gas hole in the barrel isnt big enough. I continue the break in procedure single action style..... But the best I can get outa this thing is 1.5" @ 100m !!!!!!! WTF!!! Now before you all start yapping about my shooting ability let me say I have been on the Rifle Marksmanship Team since I was a E4 and graduated Sniper School in 93'. It aint me. I expected alot more outa GA. I contact GA and ask if they test fire before shipping a 1800 upper out the door. They say to ship my entire weapon and they will get it fixed. When I get er' back and fire it I expect it to be squared away. Well not so much. Now I'm getting double feeds. Tried 4 dirrerent mags. Needless to say, Im very disapointed and pissed.......Todays Sat and they are closed, will contact on Mon and keep you all posted. |

Hi guy.
Hornady 150gr SST @ 2820fps is a much better choice for eval of your upper than M118 / M118LR. It's a majical animal {like pig} that does well in various barrel profiles and twist rates. I've seen it consistantly give one hole groups from multiple AR-10 rifles besides my own... yepper, majic shit. I understand your frustration... sounds like you got the upper that was meant for me.
Could you tell us about the lower in detail and what gen. mags are you using? |

In your original post, you state that you treated yourself to a fance upper.....which means to me that you're mating it with an existing lower.
Is the lower working correctly with another upper, or has the lower not been used? Do you have any friends in the area with compatible 7.62 rifles? Grizz |
| Dealt with GA on several guns and only ever sent one back for adjustments, totally the problem of the guy that spec'd out the ammo, but George changed the gas hole and no more problems. I knoe they are busy as are all good specialty smiths now, although it isn;t and excuse, but if it made it back to you after having its prostate checked in Kansas City, you may look for another problem. |
