Ok, I just recently bought a Stag Arms model 2 Ar. I am wanting to buy another upper, but I'm not sure what to look for. This is my first AR so I am a total newb on the subject. I am wanting to use the new upper to kill varmint, or maybe other small game at long distances. Any info will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

First question, what is your budget...

Second question, what do you consider long distance...

I would like to try and keep it under 600 if possible. As far as distance, I would like to have something that is accurate out to 300 or 400 yards.

To get another upper, complete, and an optic suitable for that is almost impossible.

In my opinion, you'd be better off putting a good scope on your Stag and using it until you have the money for another upper.

Still, it's going to be tough to shoot the small varmints at 400 with a carbine...what are you going for? Coyote, relatively easy. Gophers, not so much...

87GN, I do not think the OP is looking for a carbine.
I do not think 300 or 400 yards is to long for a 16 inch barrel but yes a 18 or 20 or 24 is much better. I would find any upper that fits my price range. Put a POS scope on it. Shoot it while saving for a better scope and anything else I thought I needed to make it accurate.

I would look for something like  this
Having an AR that shoots is better than not having one at all.

He already has a carbine. I'm saying use that carbine with good glass vs. a crappy upper with crappy glass, which is all he would get for $600, if even possible.

400 yards is not too long for a 16" barrel but a 16" government profile non FF carbine barrel is not going to shoot minute of prarie dog at 400 yards. So we need to know what he plans to shoot at.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm looking at a 24 inch stainless cmmg...are these any good?

Most people seem to like the cmmg's

However if they are close in price to these then I would lean that way.

I am with 87 though. I would at least try the one you have before dropping the cash on a new upper

It would also be a good idea to handle a 24" gun before you buy. They are very long and heavy.
Better suited to bench work then packing around
