Are extractors specific for the 6.8SPC.  I have read Stag's 6.8 bolts use 5.56mm ext's and that DPMS bolts use a specific 6.8mm ext.  I have a DPMS 6.8 bolt which broke its ext, and I ordered the comparatively expensive 6.8mm specific ext.  I can not perceive any difference between  $21 dollar 6.8 ext and $12 5.56 ext's.  Is there any difference?  Or did I just pay a $9 premium for a 5.56mm ext?

Yes there is a difference. The 6.8 case is larger therefore the radius is larger on a 6.8 extractor. A .223/5.56 may work but it will only be gripping at 2 points instead of along the whole surface. Your call.
