So who here has a RRA .308 ? Which gas system is smoother , more reliable ? Midlength or Rifle? Pics of any setups? How are the mags?

I bought the LAR-8 Varmint a few weeks ago.  I have been to the range once with it and shot 80 rounds.  I want to go Sunday, so maybe I'll be able to shoot it more.  I guess since mine has the 26" barrel, it has the rifle length.  I haven't shot one with a midlength system.  The rifle is smooth and much more accurate than I am.  It failed to feed once in the first 20 rounds, but after opening it up and putting in a little lubrication, it ran flawlessly the rest of the time.  I only have the one mag that came with it - it is very nice.  Much nicer than any FAL mag you'll probably find floating out on the market.  I hope to get some more FAL mags eventually.  I'm kind of hoping prices come down a little.  Here are some pictures of mine:

I have a mid-length and Varmint models.  Both have been outstanding shooters, consistently shooting under MOA.  Here's a picture of some groups from the Varmint:

The groups I've gotten from the mid-length aren't that much bigger than these.

I've used the mid-length in a few 3-gun comps and it has performed flawlessly.  I had one competition which I went through over 300 rounds in 20 some odd minutes without one failure.

I've noticed no difference in gas systems.

The only issue I've had with magazines is the older beat-up ones don't drop free from the mag well.  The newer magazines do.

Here's a picture of mine.  They have changed a bit.  The mid-length now wears a Trijicon 3.5x scope and the Varmint has a better scope mounting system.  I guess I need to get some update pictures:

Nice rifle.

Not to hijack the thread, but what does that pre-drilled skin in the background go to?

Looks like the skin from a AirStream camper

Thanks.  That's a fuel tank skin for a Van's Aircraft RV-7 I am building - http://flyingtodhunter.livejournal.com

Mine?  A Magpul PRS.  I know, I know, it isn't supposed to work on this rifle, but it will with a minor modification to the comb.

Here is mine with the mid-length gas tube and the 16" barrel.  I put the free float hand gaurd on and the PRS stock.

On your mid length rifle, what sights are you using?  The regular flip up sights do not line up when they are installed on the gas block?  What brand and how much?

I don't see what you had to mod –– have an up-close of what you had to do?

I haven't modified it yet, but I need to trim a small amount of length off the front of the comb.  Here is a picture of the charging handle overlapping the comb - I can charge the rifle with the comb all the way down, but not with it up right now.  Trimming the overlap will allow me to charge the rifle with the comb in any position.

I am using an A.R.M.S. #40 Std. A2 Flip Up Rear Sight ($100) and the Midwest Ind. Flip-Up Front Sight-gas block ($80) for the front sight.  I tried Yankee Hill sights and they did not work.  This combo has worked well.

That doesn't look like too much trouble.  I just might have to get one of those.

Thanks!

Picked one up last year. Shoots great. Haven't had any problems what so ever with 500 rds down the barrel.
Picked up a bunch of mags from DSarms for a good price when I bought the rifle. Have had no mag issues yet.

Absolutely love mine.  I bought it right before Obama got elected so I saved some cash.  I have over 2K rounds through it.  #3or 4 failures to feed. I'm sure due to the magazine. The trigger is borderline OK to sucks.  I was doing about 1 1/2 inchs at 100 before I put in the Geissele service rifle tigger from my other rifle.  Whamo sub MOA at 100 with 147 grain Aussie surplus!

For me I'd much rather have a RRA than a DPMS.  DPMS seems to do OK with their .308, but they have a bad rep for their AR15s.

Is it okay to shoot 7.62 surplus ammo thru these?
9/8/2009 11:27:39 AM EDT

I've shot South African surplus through my Mid-Length.  I won't shoot steel case stuff though.

[#24]
Absolutely it's ok to shoot good surplus.  The steel case stuff is absolute junk.  Try the magnet test on any of that stuff.  The magnet will stick to the bullet.  I do not mean the case, but to the actual bullet.  Steel on steel is not good.  Avoid the corrove stuff also.  I don't understand how people can spend 2K on a rifle and risk ruining it by shooting garbage.  In my experience the cheaper junk is not very accurate.  In the end isn't our object to hit the target and not just make noise?  As I said before a good trigger will make all the difference in this rifle.

Minsane, Is that the Larue Mount you are using? And, which scope are you using it with?

I'm hoping my LAR-8 std A4 will come in before too much longer.

Late reply, but yes, that is the AR-10 PRS stock - it still requires trimming.
