| I have a 450 Bushmaster for short range pig hunting, and have a DPMS LR-308 that I feel comfortable shooting out to 600 yards. However, my local gun shop has a 18" carbon fiber hand guard in the 338 Federal in DPMS. My question is that I know nothing about the 338. How much better would it shoot out to 600 yards. I like it and am considering buying it anyway, however, would I be gaining that much??? It would be a gun that I would hunt with(deer and pigs) and wouldn't shoot it past 300 yards(at game). Also would punch paper now and then for practice. So what are everyone's thoughts?? |

If you reload or have someone reload you can go farther. |

I know I'd love to have an M1 Garand chambered for that round. Seems like the perfect caliber since I don't have anything over .30. An AR style platform seems to be an excellent auto platform for this cartridge too. What's really attractive is the performance for a small package. |

| I don't see how it would be better than the .308 considering you are using the .308 case necked up to take a larger heavier bullet. The 308 doesn't perform well at longer ranges with real heavy bullets (200-220) so I can't imagine the 338 federal will do any better. It will work well in the 300yd range for sure. |
| What you are gaining is superior terminal balistics in game animals vs. 308. Long range target shooting there is no gain, just offsets specific to the load. Federal doesn't have an apples to apples comparison, they use different bullets for the 180 grain loads. Both will work. |
