A number of 5.56 users are concerned with how much ammo they need for SHTF or zombie invasions.
So how much ammo does an "average" alternate caliber user need? I've got several thousand for my Colt 7.62x39 upper but that's mostly from the SKS and AK's. All the talk about the 25WSSM has me getting anxious for my DTech upper, so I went out yesteday and bought another bag of WSSM brass. Up to about 200 cases now and plan to add more while they still make them. Neeeeddd mooorrrrre ammoooo...... It's not a sickness, just sound planning. |

Check the price, its good. |

You need at least 30,000 rounds. That way you can build a tank out of it. And a suit of armor. lol. I am using 5.56 for my shtf caliber, my only other AR caliber is .458 socom and I am much too poor to try to turn that into a shtf rifle. I do have about 200 rounds stored up now, but at 2-3 bucks a round it would be a hell of an expensive shtf gun. Plus i have yet to find it on any shelf anywhere, guess i better start reloading soon. |

I don't really think of my variants as SHTF rifles. When I got my .458 i bought 1000 rounds of brass, 1200 bullets and dies. I've got 200 or so pounds of wheel weights stashed and they're for the 45 ACP and the .458. I figure I'll wear out the barrel or break the bolt before I run out of cases. (Assuming I can get 10 loads out of each case)
The other thing is in a SHTF/TEOTWAWKI situation you're not going to need a ton of ammo. If you get into a fire fight you've already lost. One round here or there for sniping or popping a pig to eat is all you're really going to need. |

I will keep my 6.8s over 223. I have lots of reloading components put up. I ordered some special zombie killing 22long rifle ammo in the unlikely event of a zombie flare up. ![]() 6.8 ammo will really be useful in any bartering or trading situation... NOT! If you are really going to worry about and SHTF, by a bunch (I mean a s__t pot) of 22LR and at least 1k of 5.556/223 Rem. These calibers will be the useful for shooting and trading! After that I would consider stocking up on 30-06, 308 Win., and possibly 270 Win and 7mm Rem Mag. (Only if you have a rifle that will shoot these), as these are fairly popular calibers and will also be useful for both shooting and trading as well. I personally do not worry too much about SHTF. Just my $0.02 worth 320pf |

I have about 1400 rounds of Alexander Arms 6.5 Grendel ammo stocked up. It is getting more and more expensive every year to buy. It used to be $240 for 200 rounds, but now it is $310 for 200 rounds. You can buy the crappy Wolf ammo for the Grendel, but you risk blowing your gun up as a few have done using that ammo.
I keep around 600 rounds of .50 Beowulf as well, and will increase that to 800 rounds if and when I can find some. |

I'm curious. This is the second version of the JP Rifles Safety Warning. The first version explicitly mentioned Wolf Ammo by name, but now they say, other than Alexander Arms or Lapua brass based ammo that includes Black Hills. If you go to 65grendel.com you can do a search and see pictures of peoples rifles that had bolts broken and were damaged when firing wolf on occasion, and when reloading Wolf brass. Not trying to start a panic, just wanted to relay what I have seen and heard. Supposedly the metalergy of Wolf ammo isn't near as strong as the Lapua brass, and it can rupture the casing under load. |
