Just picked mine up today. Looks really nice. Only one problem... I knew it did not have a dust cover or forward assist but I overlooked one thing...No case deflector! Normally this would be a non-issue but I'm a lefty and if memory serves me correctly I can expect the brass to whack me squarely in the forehead area (at least that's what happened to me in Vietnam with the "Mattel" M16). I called DPMS today and they said I could purchase a "case deflector" to solve my problem. While on the phone with the rep I found the deflectors on their website. He told me to use the standard flat top deflector but the sportical has a raised or high-rise type rail. Looking at the pictures I told him that the my model had the raised rail and that the deflector he recommended does not seem "low" enough to work effectively with the raised rail and the one that would hang down low enough appeared to be designed for use with the skeletonized high rise rail (mine is solid). After pointing that out he seemed confused and said he did not have an answer and neither do it. Therefore I'm turning to you guys to give me some advice. Anyone have any experience with the "slickside" upper and how the cases are ejected, straight to the side, side and forward or as I suspect; towards my forehead target? Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated. I hope I'm posting this is the correct area. Thanks in advance.

Hmmm interesting! Are you a lefty also? If so then no worries! Where does your throw the brass? straight out or to the front? Thanks for your patience....

Well unless I'm imagining this- at a range I did shoot it lefty for a second the day i tried it out, didn't bug me- though I did tuck my head in. I could have sworn I tried it- but either way my rifle realllllly threw the brass clear to the side.
Put on a hat- and give it a whirl- couldn't hurt to give it a try!

ETA: FROM DPMS'S OWN WEBSITE!

If that doesn't go low enough... then you can always glue another metal piece onto it so it does!

Thanks for the info. Looked at that deflector and was just about ready to order it. Found out it will only fit the high rise that is "skeletonized" (part of it fits thru one of the cutouts ib the high rise). Guess I'll just give it a try and see what happens... won't be the first time I've been whacked in the head! HAHAHAHA

I had a DPMS 308LR 24" and a 16" when they first came out.  Same receiver you have on your Sportical.  I'm a lefty, and never had any trouble when they were factory stock--fired over 10K rounds between the 2 rifles.  (Port and SA surplus were only $150/k delivered at the time)

My problems began when I installed a JP adjustable gas block and had it nearly completely closed.  With the gas closed too much, the bolt wasn't moving fast enough for a clean ejection and I took a nasty burn/welt on my cheek.  A quick turn of the adjustment screw and it was back to a 2:00, 10 foot ejection path.

Take a few shots (with eye protection!) and see if the ejection path is properly tuned....I doubt you'll have any problems unless you start changing things around.
