Hey guys im new to the site. I am looking to pick up a Armalite AR15, but i heard that there is a gun that you can get in .308 and also buy and .223 barrel for it? I figured you guys would know if this is true or not. That would be awesome to have availablitly of both calibers in one gun, but some things are too good to be true. Thanks for any info!!! David |
| Perhaps there is a wildcat or a cartridge utilizing the .308 or .243 case with a .224 neck diameter. .243 isn't that much bigger and has similiar sized projectiles, so you could get an ar-10 lower in .308 and have an upper in .243 as well as .308. The limiting factor is the overall cartridge length, provided you want to utilize the semi-auto function of your rifle and feed from magazines. |
| OK so there is no such thing as one gun being able to be a .308 and switched around to .223. Thanks guys I cant freakin decide what i want to get, i want somethin i can go out and just unload for no apparent reason, shoot out of a truck at snakes and critters. But I would love to use it to jump deer or if a deer walks out at no more than 100 yards be able to pop it. I only shoot necks and head so im sure the .223 would do it............. |
| Hmmmm so i could get the AR15 then be able to change uppers for those 3 cart.? Sorry but im not to familiar with those calibers but i have heard good things about them. I have a .270 and a 6mm and not one single deer has thought about moving. So if anyone could give me some characteristics between those 2 and the 3 gunner mentioned. But I like what im hearing so far. I cant wait to get this thing, I love em! |
| I think I am going to get the AR15 because I watched the future weapons with that 6.8spc a long time ago but forgot what round it was until i just remembered and i loved the round so i would love to be able to have that round in my AR15. Thanks all for the help especially gunner! |
| 7.62x39 is a tapered case and can be problematic when it comes to magazines. .204 ruger is a tiny cartridge ideally suited for varminting, I don't think I'd ever shoot a deer with a 32-40 grain 20 cal bullet. I'm sure it will do the trick with velocities near 3800-4000 fps but I've got better suited rifles for that task. The 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel give you the most bang for your buck in an ar-15. 5.56mm is what it is, a hopped up .22 so its applications are somewhat limited. For small critters and deer you can manage just fine with any of the aformentioned cartridges, but I'd look at practicality too before comitting to any of these cartridges. |
First welcome RedneckRacinZR2, Second, The 204 is NOT a good whitetail round and in many states 223/5.56 is not permitted for whitetail. Where my ranch is in the midwest .223 is not allowed. Now Texas where I also do alot of hunting it is legal. Choose wisely, but the 204 most certainly should not be considered a whitetail round. It was designed with varmint hunters in mind last I checked. |
| Im pretty sure im going to go with the plain ol Armalite AR15M3 in .223 then buy a complete upper assembly in 6.8SPC. BTW I live in Louisiana and the deer are not huge and this gun will never be shot at a deer farther than 100 yrds if that. I have a .300 win mag for everything else in N.A. I really like that 6.8mm and I really like the prices of the .223 ammo. |
| You can put a 30WSSM upper on the AR15, Mike Milli of Dedicated Technologies has barrels and is currently offering uppers and dies for this caliber. Mike has stated he is getting close to 30-06 performance with 165gr. bullets. Mike is a very well known custom AR builder and gunsmith. He also offers a 358WSSM upper. |
