I just ordered from Cardinal Armory a 6.8 lightweight barrel, flash hider and bolt. This should fit nicely with the existing VLTOR MUR upper, Young MFG Bolt Carrier, PRI Gas Buster charging handle, and JP Enterprises VTAC Rifle length hand guards.

I've got a LaRue Low Profile Gas Block in .750. Will this work on that barrel you think? I forgot to ask.

Also, what's the best place to get mags and ammo?

.750 gas block will work. Cardinal Armory or anyplace that sells PRI or CProduct mags.
SilverStateArmory for your ammo or SSA for the brass to roll your own.

Got shipping confirmation. Can't wait. Now I got the Vortex FH since that's what I have on both my ar's and the 458 socom. But I saw where someone said that it looks huge on the lightweight barrel. Anyone try that mix and can give a thought on it?

Also thought about getting the Nikon Buckmaster scope for it. Any thoughts for Deer hunting?

I ordered the same barrel, bolt and Vortex FH as you did.  In fact mine shipped today as well so I will see if the Vortex really looks funny like people say it does.  Some have suggested getting the Phoenix FH for the light weight barrel but the specs show they have the exact same outside diameter.  I couldn't find any FHs with smaller ODs.  I am going to use mine for 3-gun and tactical matches.  I put a TA31f ACOG on my upper with a Docter mini red-dot on top as the local matches have a lot of CQB stages (under 50 meters) as well as plates out at 300 to 400 meters.

Got it at 10am this morning. Gotta love living right down the road from the shop. Taking pics and assembling. LaRue low profile gas block fits the barrel perfectly, but I did forget to order it dimpled. Now I gotta find someone with a drill press or I'm gonna have to go get one. I hate those excuses to get new tools.

Looking forward to the pics.

I'm thinking about the LW barrel too.

Mags....get the Barretts.  They are the best quality.  They run $40 a piece for the 30 rounders and are slightly longer (I think 1.5") than a standard AR 30 round mag.

I have the CPs....they will not function in my AR...but I have first gen mags apparently, so perhaps their new 25 rounds (dimensionally the same size as std. AR 30 rndrs) are better.

Good luck,
Sean

Cardinal Armory lightweight 6.8 barrel, vortex FH, LMT enhanced 6.8 bolt, young mfg bolt carrier, VLTOR MUR upper, JP VTAC rifle handguards, etc.

And on to the pics...

So for eyeballs on this thing, I was going to migrate that DMS to my 458 socom and get a Nikon Buckmaster for this one. What magnification is best for hunting on it?

I agree, to the point that I no longer build with YHM tubes.  JP Viking Tactics all the way.  There simply is nothing else like them.  Love building with them, love the results.

They are especially nice with the lightweight 16".

The mailman was standing at my door yesterday afternoon with a package from Cardinal Armory.  My lightweight 16", bolt, & Vortex are here .  The quality of this barrel looks great.  I am going to be out of town all next week and won't be able to finish the build or have pictures up  for two weeks .  Look on the bright side, "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas".

Okjust ordered a Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 scope and a Larue SPR-E mount for it. Plus a 45 dillo since I didn't have one and a FUG for my other rifle.

The monarch info said 95% light transmission as opposed to the 90% on the Buckmaster. Good call, bad call?

Stuff is ordered and shipped, just not in my hands yet. Ordered some PRI mags from Cardinal too. Gonna order ammo from SSA. Anybody got a preferred type for Deer hunting in NC? I got the 458 for the bigger critters, zombies, and cloned dinosaurs.

What are the barrel specs? Is it one of the SPCII/DMR chambered ones with the 1/11" twist?
7/4/2008 3:46:54 PM EDT
[#25]
Here are the specs on mine:
Chamber: SAAMI specification, with 0.100" freebore in throat (sometimes referred to as "SAAMI-spec II").
Rifling: SAAMI specification, four-groove, 1:11" rate of twist.
Profile: Lightweight.  Diameter is 0.70" under the handguards, 0.60" behind the muzzle threads.
Weight: 25.5 oz.
Muzzle threads: 5/8" x 24 tpi (standard for 6.8)
Finish: Black Cerakote

You can go to MidwayUSA.  If you have a FFL or FFL 03, you can get a great savings on them e.g. 30.00 off the tube.

SHould get the 4 6.8 PRI mags tomorrow. Can't wait. Then I gotta order me some ammo. I was thinking about the SSA pro hunters and then some of the hollow point bonded. Thoughts?

Oh yeah, and still waiting on the Nikon 3-9x40 and the Larue gear.

What are you hunting?

-If you're hunting deer, then I would get the Pro hunter in Combat pressure.

-If wild Hogs or larger game like Mule deer or Elk, I would get the Barnes TSX 110, again in Combat pressure.

-For Home defense, it is hard to beat the 90 grain frangible.  I think Art used the Sierra 90 grain HP, and they are great bullets, which should fragment even in sheetrock.  You can get along just fine with the commercial pressure loads there.

Any reason to NOT go with the Hornady 110g TAP?

My answer would have to be "no."  I think the 110 grain TAP loads are great round for HD, as are the regular 110 grain VMax loads.

I guess I just have become particularly fond of the Speer TNT and the Sierra 90 grain HP, because they are short bullets, easy to load, you can get lots of powder in the case behind then, and both seem to be exceptionally accurate.  Some guns don't like the VMAX (my Cardinal Armory superlight does), but then again, minute of bad-guy is fine for home defense ranges anyway.

Got the PRI mags and they are tight in the magwell. You have to pull them out. I'm guessing I'll need to work them a bit to see where they are rubbing and use some emery cloth on em.

I like the JP too, but need more flexible rail options (believe it or not!).

There are places where I just can't get a rail on the hg (or can't get teh one I want where I want it) and it irks me somewhat.

If the C products and the PRIs are both tight, the emory cloth should probably go in the tight magazine well, not on all the in spec mags....
