Finally got my new LR-308 yesterday.

It had a lot of oil from the factory so I tried to wipe it off and only succeeded
in ADDING buttloads of lint and fuzz to the rifle making it look even worse.

I got the same result using paper towels, clean old cloth diaper, patches, etc.

What do you wipe it down with to keep it nice and black?

Yep.  I have a black hand towel, like you keep near the sink in the bathroom.  That and CLP=no lint, or at least none that is visible.

I actually use .50 cal cleaning patches (soaked in CLP, although now I'm trying CorrosionX) to wipe down my guns

Brushes..detail brushes, tooth brushes. Get a few of the finer sized paint brushes. Great for applying oil inside the receiver and on the bcg too. Get a bigger brush with stiffer bristles to get dust, soot, and lint off.

edit: those silicon gun cloths are better suited for cleaning guns with blued finishes than these anodized ones.

I use rags torn from old black T-shirts, and a little 30 weight non-detergent motor oil.  The cheap stuff, not synthetic, not Mobil1.

The kind of stuff that goes in the lawn mower.

Makes for a bit duller finish than what you get with CLP, though I have been known to use CLP internally.  Now I am experimenting with Strikehold.

I haven't heard much feedback from shooters about Strikehold, my tests indicate it is a very good firearms lube.  It stinks, so it has to be good!
