I have a DPMS LR-308. Yesterday we were out pilinking around. At first I was using Ultramax 168 gr. Factory reloads.  At first they were OK. But after about ten round the shell would load but the bolt would not close all the way. When I went to clear it, I could not get the bolt open. I had to use a cleaning rod and some one pulling on the bolt. Not fun or safe with live ammo.havingDave

It sounds like the reloads were not properly resized and didn't fit the DPMS's fairly tight chamber.

I then use winchester and fusion ammo with out any problems. Any ideas?  Thank in advance

That's the problem. Shoot better ammo.

I concure, my DPMS AP4 .308 was very picky at first, wouldn't shoot HSM reloads and a lot of surplus ammo.  Now it will shoot any factory ammo, South African and Argentine surplos .308 but stlll won't shoot Malaysian surplus.

My LR-308 AP4 is picky about lubrication, but not much else.  It does NOT like to be run dry.  If it's appropriately lubed, it has no real ammo preference.  It feeds Igman, and Federal Gold Medal match equally well.

So the factory reload are big and my chamber is small. Should I change to a small base die?
Any other thoughts? Thanks again

The SB die will help and a good idea to use when reloading for any semiauto weapon.Make sure you have it set up correctly and also trim the cases to proper length AFTER resizing also.

I've never shot a factory load throgh my .260 DPMS. I check and set the headspace on my reloads and never have a problem. No guessing, no factory crap ammo. Shoots under MOA at 100, 200, and 300 yards.

Sugestion: Throw away all your junk foreign ammo trash. Spend the money you save on reloading components.
Like everyone else, I learned the hard way with factory loaded junk.

I've run over a thousand rounds of both factory and handloads(mine) through my LR.308. I have found that the chamber is quite picky about being clean. when it gets fouled with gunpowder residue it does not chamber very well or extract very well. With my particular rifle it starts to foul and get sticky between 50 and 75 rounds. When I clean it after a range session I polish it with some Flitz on a bore mop. When I load my own I do use a small base die. To see if your chamber accepts brass from a regular or small base die, size a piece of brass with the standard die and insert it into the chamber with your fingers. I remove the extractor from the bolt and slowly close the bolt and carrier assembly and let it stop when it stops, don't force it. If the bolt closes all the way you can use a standard die, if not try it again with a piece of brass FL sized with a small base die, it should close nicely. You aren't using any force so the brass should fall back out. If it doesn't push it out with a cleaning rod. If neither brass piece fits in all the way without forcing it, look at the shoulder of the casing to see if there is any contact marks on the shoulder. If there is, set the die down a quarter turn to bump the shoulder back untill it fits. Just my .02, and don't anyone holler at me I've got sensitive feelings. And like the other feller said, make sure the brass is trimmed properly.
