I've ordered a DPMS LR-308L and am trying to decide on the optics. I plan to use the gun for deer hunting, mostly in the woods and in fairly close quarters. I've got an Eotech on my AR, but think I would like something with a bit of magnification for this. I'm thinking either a 4X ACOG or maybe one of the Leopold Mark 4/CQ T.

Anyone have any experience with either setup on a 308? Other suggestions?

have you considered the IOR line of optics?

for deer hunting I'd pick a 3 to 9x. pick which one you like. re: the last thread IOR makes a really nice 2 to 12x. Ive seen one and it is sweet. doug

I have a DPMS 308a4 16".  I run an eotech with a po-boy Larue that is 2.5x on a pivot mount.

Up close it pivots to the side...mid-range it pivots behind the eotech for 2.5x.

I also have a Mark 4 if I want to change out the whole rig and reach out alittle further.  What ever you do...I would look at the Larue mounts.

I had both an IOR 2.5-10x42 and TA33 ACOG (3.5 power).

It really depends on what you are doing.  From prone w' bipod, at 100yards, I would like the IOR.  If I am moving, shooting standing or kneeling, the ACOG is great.

My older IOR is just a lot of scope.  The newer 2-12 is lighter and smaller.

TA33 ACOG

Now the ACOG came off my wifes AR-15, which got SBR'd and went with an EOTech.

The TA33 is great, but I wonder how a TA11 would workout.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a Tikka T3 with a Monarch UCC 4x-9x scope that is a tack driver. I'll still use that for posting from my stand, but I wanted something that allowed for a bit faster target acquisition in the woods for the LR.

I know some people will argue against this simply because of the brand, but Millet has many good offerings for a great price.  My brother uses the DMS-1 on his .223, I use the TRS-1 on my LR-308.  You won't find a better deal in the $200-300 range.  However, if you can afford a nice high $$$ scope, I love the Leupold CQ/T.  I used someone elses AR at the range equipped with one and thought it was a wonderful scope.  Not a big fan of the small objective though.  I'd rather have my TRS-1 with a backup red dot mounted on top/side for when the deer sneak up on you.... lol.  Really though, the light and clarity is superb for the money, considerably better than the Bushnell 3200 Elite or Nikon Prostaff I had mounted before.

I got a chance to compare the CQ/T with the ACOG today and of the two I'm leaning toward the Leopold because I like the variable magnification (1x-3x). The IOR looks a lot like the Leopold, and is priced almost exactly the same, but I wasn't able to compare the two. How do they stack up against one another?

In the Nikon Monarch series there are scopes with 2x-10x power.  great low light great everything.   Monarch is thier upper series, but a whole lot cheaper then an ACOG

You're right--they're great scopes, but I don't need one. I've already got one, you see. I have a Monarch UCC 4x9x40 on my Tikka T3 Lightweight (.30-06). But I'm buying the AR for walking through the woods, and even at 4 power the Monarch is kind of slow in tight confines like that. I've lost a few deer because I wasn't able to get a sight picture quickly enough. I love my Tikka but don't like hunting with a scope. If I was going to put a regular Monarch on the DPMS, I could just save myself $1,500 and use my Tikka.

I have a TAC-20 upper on order, sometime end May early June, basically a DPMS everything except it's on a Fulton reciever.

I already have a TA31F and Comp 2 aimpoint, but I've given it alot of though and want to leave them on the AR15's, although they both will work, personally I like to have a bit more magnification when reaching out longer ranges.  My plan at the moment is "low buck glass".

Tasco has a 2.5-10x42 mil-dot, that I'm going to start off with.  I'm really starting to learn how to use the mil-dots, just not ready to jump into the high dollar glass yet... well over $1400 into a rifle and I'm slapping a $55 scope on it.

I've been useing a borrowed 6-24x42 tasco mil-dot on my 5.56 18" SPR, so far I've been nothing but impressed with how well it's been, the rifle got knocked over in the bed of the truck and fell out of the rack, the cheap scope has held it's zero.  I would have thought they charged more for thier scopes, but a simple google returns an average around $70 on the Target/Varmit Scope... wouldn't take it into combat, but it seems good for a bit of weekend shooting.  They're clear enough to reach out to 600 yards, I'll bet 800 would still be clear enough, that's about enough for most.
