Is the ammo running a lot for 6.8?  Are there good self defense loads out there?  I don't use my 5.56 AR hardly at all.  Only shot it once in the last year.  I figure if I don't shoot as much and want something more powerful to maybe take a deer that 6.8 is the way to go.  Who has good 6.8 rifles without breaking the bank with Barret.

Ko-Tonics 16" Lt Wt. Chrome lined chamber & bore with a mid length gas system, 1 in 11 twist, with the improved SPC II chamber....
PRI mags and Silver State Armory factory loaded ammo.....

Silver State is working on some "blasting" ammo so we also have that to look forward to

Were not for Tim at K0-Tonics and Art at Silver State we simply would not have the 6.8 SPC running
at it's near full potential...

Nobody gives you a better upper or ammo for your buck...for HD or Huntin'

RRA has 6.8 SPC uppers at 439 shipped (see Pete at Legal Transfers, sponsor of this site)
Also Ko-Tonics has their Grunt Upper for a little more then the RRA, both are top notch uppers.

Ammo, well SSA has a new plinking load coming out which should be the cheepest on the MKT as well as a bunch of other offering, hunting loads to combat loads.
Hornady has regular loads as well as TAP self defense loads.

Remington has their ammo but its the bottom tier of options in retrospect.
Also, HSM has 2 loadings. I believe CorBon has a DPX load as well.

Barrett offers ammo but I have yet to shoot any,

I'll bet I get to shoot the new plinking ammo the 2nd weekend in March. Hi Tech Rancher may have some already. Chris, what can you say?

I think theres more of it out there for testing then one might imagine... take pics of your groups from your DMR if you get to, I am working on a write up for a few boards and one possible publication for the new SSA "training and plinking load" I would love to use and ref as many 6.8 configs as possible. Your DMR, Ko-Tonics 1:11 SAMMI Spec II and a regular SAAMI spec I are what I am planning on using so far for data, I hope you get ahold of some to test because that would be a nice addition to the write up.

I don't have them yet, but I expect that we'll have some to test for the hunt and for some fun shooting as well.   Art was supposed to ship the ammo here in advance of his arrival, so that he wouldn't have to deal with the weight issues on the plane.  I can only hope he's going to include some of the new plinking ammo, so that I can do a write up on that as part of the overall story on our hunt, and our shooting.

ETA:  Cold, I have the Ko-Tonics 16 superlight with SPC II, & of course 1: 11 for testing, and I am sure Constructor will have his DMR, so there will be two rifles right there we can try.  I sold my SPC I or SAAMI chambered upper, though.

Do me a big favor and please do take photos of your hunt, of your rig and of Constructors DMR, being sure to take photos of the groups you both get with the ammo and at what distance.  Also, any game harvested is always enjoyed!

Keep us posted, you going after Hogs or Javilina or predators? I wish I was back in Texas... I love hog hunting with the 458.
If you dont mind, contact me after the hunt etc is over, I am working on an paper and would love if I could include some of the data from this hunt.

Don't worry, I'll get in touch a soon as we wrap up the weekend.  We are primarily going for Hogs.  If we see a coyote, though, he's toast

If you are looking for more power than the 5.56mm and reload,  I would suggest that you go with the 6mm-223.  6.8 SPC ammo is expensive and not easy to find in mom&pop sporting good stores. (Just read some of the 6.8 ammo posts on this site).

6mm-223 ammo is easily made from .223/5/56mm brass (which is plentiful) by simply running it through the re-sizer die.

From a 20" barrel you can push an 85-90 g bullet to about 2800-3000 fps.

Also, you may want to rethink your 5.56 Ar, if the state you hunt in will allow .223 cal.  There are now 69 gr, 77, 80 and 90 gr .223 Sierra MK bullets avalible. The BC and sectional densities is very high on these pills.

And if you really want to step-up to the bigtime power, consider the Ar-10 in .308 or the Ar15 big bores like 458 SOCOM, 50 Beowulf, or the 338 spector.  I am not sure about the ammo avalability for these big boys though.  May be someone on this board would know.

I currently have 75gr TAP for home defense use.  Gotta buy some hunting rounds.  We are allowed to hunt with .223 here but I would prefer something bigger.
