BOy do I need some help. I bought a DPMS AP4 I want to put a quad rail on it. How in the heck do you get the forearm off? Are there any full scale manuals that show how to do all of these mods? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks very much.

the safest way is to send it to a dealer with all the correct tools, info and experience.  Even sending it to DPMS with the parts you want installed would be a good option.  I have done both.

Yes you can do it yourself. Its not hard but you need a few tools.  Here is that step by step manual you wanted CLICK HERE go about 1/3 or the way down the page and it is titled "Install your own free-float rail system, step by step:" by poster FALARAK  Actually take a look at the whole thing so you get a understanding of how your rifle is put together.  It will also list the tools you need.  All of them can be gotten at Brownells.

Hope this is of some help.

I don't like sending anything out to be worked on if I can help it.  Plus doing it yourself you learn something which is sadly lacking in this society of conveniences we live in.  No one knows how to fix or work on anything any more, if it takes more then making a phone call to do it.  My family from my grandparents to my parents taught me how to do everything possible for normal life, from making our own clothes and growing and cooking our foods from scratch to fixing cars, firearms, electronic etc..  If you owned it, you should know how it worked and be able, with in reason, to work on them.  That was what I had drilled into my head.  We are now a disposable society if it breaks buy a new one.  Industry as a whole is trying to make things so you can't work on them as the figured out they can make more money selling news ones in a certain time period then supply parts.  The consumer gets screwed and is made more helpless and dependent on big corp for everything. Sorry not me.  It might take me longer and I may screw up now in then but I will know how to do it going forward and you can never have to much knowledge or skills.  My biggest regret is I never learned how to run a lathe or mill.  I wish I could find someone willing to teach me.  As once you master that you can make yourself just about anything you need.

Tim

ETA: next time you have something like this try making your title more descriptive then "DPMS".  Maybe "Can I change Hand guards myself?".  You will get quicker help by the people that know the answer.  I usually wouldn't look at a post like you had.

Tim_W Thanks a lot. This is great info. I agree with you I would rather do it myself if it is reasonable. I am a tool and die maker by trade and have the skills to do a lot of things myself, with weapons it is more a concern of breaking or marring something if you do not know what to turn or how to remove something. I will put this ifo to good use.
