Ive been wanting to use heavy bullets (75 amax, 90 sierra etc) in my 223 AR but you cant load them to mag length. So what about the 222 Rem? Is that an option? Any opinions? |
28 grs vs 30grs. Pretty close. AND you gain a higher bc bullet. If you want the 223 capacity find the 222 improved(it moves the shoulder up and reduces case taper slightly with a 40* shoulder). |

You have to remember that the 223 is 45mm long and the 222 is 43mm.Some of that case capacity is coming from the long neck.I don't know about ASI only doing bbl's-they are quick at answering e-mails though. -A question I have for someone here is do the 222 and 223 have the same case taper . Would it be possible to use a full length 223 sizing die (on 223 ) then run it thru a 222 die minus about 2mm(.08) to "raise" the shoulder on a 222 for a shorter .233 neck(VS .313)?------would this add another expenditure come headspace time vs parent cartridge? ETA-I think I've got it , run a 223 thru a 222 die 2mm then run it thru a full length 223 to take any bow out of the sides and trim the neck 2mm.That way you get the 222 with the 223 length neck? |
I've put the 6x41 on hold till spring, I have too many other projects going and I should really be developing loads for my competition rigs. If you want to do the 75s you need an 8 twist, You could shoot them at 2.3 in a .223 but, the accuracy wouldn't be the best. If you had a match chamber like a "PTG 223" with a .023 leade they would be better. If you are going to have a custom barrel made then IMO the best way would be to shorten the neck of the .223 case about .040- .050 and possibly change the angle of the 223 shoulder to 30 degrees, that way you could use 223 cases that you know will function in your mags and rifle you may lose .2 gr at the most. I have a 8 twist coming Monday or Tuesday I'll test it with 2.3" loaded 75s next weekend and tell you if they work at all. Let me know if you need a reamer design for the 75s in a .223, I think I have one on file. EDIT- A cheaper way may be to run a PTG 223 reamer in .040 short and cut .040 off of the bottom of the die that way you wouldn't need to buy custom dies or a custom reamer. EDIT#2 PRI is now making 5.56mags that allow loads to 2.3" |

You could use a 7 twist but not a chromelined 7. IMO a 7 is just to fast, most highpower shooters will use a 7.7 or 8 twist. 1 full thread on a AR extension is .0417 so that makes it easy if you have one that is already chambered. We can just cut that much off of the barrel and retime the gas port and not touch the chamber. then cut the same off of the die. If it's a new barrel then just chamber it short to start with. |
