New to this... anyone have pics, comparisons and price comparisons on this stuff? Does it take their own mags or can you use .223 mags? I am new to the whole 6.8 thing so... HELP!! |
Mags, bolt, and barrel are different. Ammo is more expensive than 5.56. I'm hoping it'll be a great deer cartriedge. Other than for hunting use, though, I'd stick with 5.56. |
I'd like to build one specifically for that purpose. Probably a Stag. |
I'm thinking a little more basic... ![]()

Blah...don't go basic go all out. With the shorter barrels you are going to lose velocity. |
The M4 profile is a waste on a hunting gun, IMHO. Besides, you'll want a free-floating forearm for a hunting gun anyway. |
What? M4 profiles are lightweight and reasonably accurate. Majority of shots at deer are from within 300 yards... A 11.5 would be nice. Must havees for the change are bolt, barrel, mags and M4 feedramps. |
I was referring to the fact that there's no use paying for the grenade-launcher cutouts *if* you can find a regular-profile barrel a few $$ cheaper. Unless, of course, you use a grenade launcher on your deer gun.....

See if you go all out and have a cool looking upper the deer will come in closer to check out the wicked awesome rifle and you can shoot them at closer range

First of all thanks for moving this Zhukov to the right place... Now would you rather spend your money on a 6.8 or would you rather build a .308 "GET BOTH" is NOT an option. If you were to build it... why would you pick the caliber you picked? Please forgive my ignorance if you already had this discussion. I have been a GD worm for the longest time and hardly ventured in this area. |

Think the difference between an AR10 and an AR15. The 15 is shorter, and more importantly, lighter and a whole lot less recoil. I got a 10 thinking it would be a good deer gun, but even in the lightest weight it was pretty heavy to carry around the woods. I now have a 6.8 that is much handier and a lot lighter. |
If I'm lugging the damn thing up the mountain, an M4 would be just fine for me. I'm in the thick stuff in WV, not on an open prairie. I doubt I could see a deer much passed 100 yards on 90% of the property anyway. And... I can start basic. I didn't mean I would keep it that way forever. |

I am building a 6.8 instead of a getting a .308. I was all set to buy a DPMS .308 but decided the 6.8 would do what I wanted as a hunting rifle with less weight and cost. I picked up one of Tim's (Kotonics) 18" SS closeout barrels to start with. It's killing me to wait for the parts I want to complete it. Then I have to buy a bunch of ammo, reloading supplies, etc (damn this BRD is expensive |
Jadams, I want to know how you like that upper, I had denny build my 556 and I love it, keep us posted?! ok
