DPMS .308 AP4 Report... Still breaking in the barrel, though w/o a bore brush this time quicker. It is tedious, while tinkering with the sights as well, and some would argue dubious benefit. So far 40 rounds total w/o a hitch, using Remigton UMC green/white box 150 grain rounds-dust guard closed prior to first shot/locking back last round on mag, all good. I figured the last group of the day, take it out to 100 yards and do the last five yard group. I had no bags, stock open sights (which while OK I can't shoot peeps for the kind of groups I know myself and the rifle can), and just one of those cheapo plastic bipods, and was difficult for me to get a decent weld between the Mickey Mouse ears and pretty uncomfortable position on the bench, fogging up my glasses in the swelter-again I wasn't there to shoot x_ring, just breaking in the barrel with whatever gear I had in the car. Every shot sent the gun hopping across the bench-and I was getting a little punchy ![]() Through the light rain and wind, in the beginning of the string, part of the target flopped upwards and stuck-obscuring almost completely the 2,5 inch red circle on the target Regardless of these obvious handicaps, I shot a pretty quick 5-shot string, with about 10-15 secs between shots. The result was a 4 shot group slightly less than 3.5 inches with one called flyer that brought it out to 4.5 inches, strung vertically though-not wider than 2.5 inches...I think with some sandbags, breathing, slowing down, and a better position I could make a 2.5 inch group with the open sights, with this ammo. I guess I'm pretty happy with it under the conditions, since the last time I shot something with open sights past 50 yards was 3 years ago ![]() I really want to warm her up for the SA stuff, and see how she eats it. I'll shoot it tomorrow w/o cleaning it (just oil it) and see how it goes (originally was going to wait 100-200 rounds before trying it, but why not? That way I can save the rest of my storebought UMC .308 for breaking in my DPMS SASS

Cool!!! I broke mine in with 100 rounds of "good" stuff, and she's been eating 280+ rounds of SA perfectly. I have put some other loose milsurp from various places, and had only one FTE, and I believe that was my fault. She sat in the locker at work for three days dirty with no lube, can you blame her? I'll take the hit on that one. Overall, It's a great weapon so far. I have another 600+ of SA to blast soon!!!! |

do not shoot without cleaning your barrel. if the carbon cools and hardens, it should be removed before firing again. also it has been stated that breaking in a barrel with an exposed base bullet is not good, use a hpbt with a closed bottom. good yours fired with the dust cover closed, seems that many have been having problems with that. |

I guess it's too late now-but I've never heard the hollow point boat tail theory... I cleaned the barrel yesterday after the 100 yard group, and will clean it again just prior to shooting it again (I meant not clean the bolt/carrier group, just oil it). Now I'll go to 10 rounds and clean...maybe for another 20-40 rounds before I try the SA stuff. No problems at all with the dust carrier closed...the bolt moves just slightly and plang, it's open. Now, if someone has their hand in the way (cradling the magazine) that would jam it. |
