I got back from the range, and I wanted to post that the LR-308 AP4 is a great rifle. I ran a bunch of South African 7.62x51 through it, and it ran perfectly. If anyone is on the fence about this great rifle, they should go for it. DPMS has hit a homerun with the AP4. |

If you are looking for department purchase, go for it. After shooting mine, the PD ordered two for SWAT. They worked great out of the box, are accurate as can be and really compliment the bolt action .308's. With any decent optic, they go head to head with the Remington 700's when fed good ammo. We use the 110 grain TAP for general issue, although other bullets are available for different needs. The mags are a little tight when new, but very reliable and seem like they will be real durable. |

I have the regular handguards. The freefloat rail would be even better. The handguard gets pretty warm under sustained fire. I have used the standard detachable sight. It works well. For optics, I have used an eotech and a bushnell 10x. Both of these work great. The mags are very tight when you get them full. It is best to go downloaded until they break in. |
Come on, AR-180. Here ya go with the "Warm" comments again. I shot Mr. AR-180 DPMS this weekend. The damn thing ran like a top and was quite capable. The ONLY thing I'll say is the handguards were not WARM, but rather HOT, if not very, very HOT. If your're doing a lot of shooting, you'll need gloves or an alternative set of handguards. If it's just for MOA ( it's defiintely capable of sub-MOA as I've seen it done) plinking at low round counts, the standard factory handguards will do just fine. |
| We have found that the .308 Hornady TAP in the 110 grain don't overpenetrate which was a concern inside the city. It penetrates (or lack there of) drywall and common building materials the same as the .223 rounds. This made it an easier sell for letting them deploy in the city as a patrol rifle. They have access to heavier bullets for different missions. |

Martens - thanks for the reply I went to Hornaday and checked their ballistics section and see your point. Glad your dept is trying to see the problem in advance. Have you all shot any / many different types of glass (perpendicular / oblique) with the 110's? Or do you use something heavier / bonded for this role? good luck |

We shot several windshields at varying angles with the 110 and 155 grain TAP and could not find any discernible difference between POA and POI at realistic differences behind the glass. For primary glass penetration we use the tried and true Federal GOld match. In all honesty the .308 AR's are new this year and we are just really getting started in maxing their capabilites. We use 150 gr wolf for rural man hunts (some may scoff but it holds 1 to 1.25 MOA out to 200 yards). In the next year we really want to see what the guns are capable of. |
