I purchased my Beowulf looking at it to be my Eastern Deer Woods Hunting Solution. Recoil blows, interferes with long range sessions, etc. so I came here looking for advice. I've always favored MAGNAPORTing over muzzle brakes for the aesthetics. WulfGuy and others championed the MGI recoil buffer, which I purchased and installed. Range session still proved a bit stout - so I questioned the wisdom of a permenant recoil pad. I came up with no solutions. Next I listened to the 10+ recoil spring advocates. Installed this and I must say, these three modifications make shooting the BIG BORE pleasant BUT still MANLY, meaning when you squeeze that trigger you KNOW it's a BIG BORE.

If you go the MAGNAPORT route, sign and incude a wavier for a 4-port cut, because they will only 2-port with their operational guarantee. I do not know it subsonics would cycle.

Long live the Big Bore!!!!

Hey for 68.00 get yourself the MB from AA....if it doesnt work then just take and heat it up and it will come off!  Also what type of Stock do you use?

Hmmm...Well, I'm running a +10% Wolff spring on a Cav Arms A1 stock with a slip on LimbSaver recoil pad.  Still stout recoil, but I have regular shooting sessions with the 50B and 458 SOCOM that last 200+ rounds, and I'm 6 foot 135 pounds (skinny)!  Maybe a set up like this will help you before you spend the $$$ to permanently alter you barrel?  Perhaps just the slip over pad for a quick fix?  Would be a lot cheaper!

Stock is standard A2 - I really like the current config BIG, it is "ying & yang". On the bench it is gentle enough, but STOUT enough to let you know you shot a BIG BORE.

Thanks.

I'd try a slip on Limb Saver they are supposed to really help with felt recoil....then if that doesnt work than go with the MB....I would not do the magnaporting, since if their is a problem than you wont be able to get AA to do any work on the upper....

get the muzzle brake it helps big time!

i had a bare muzzle and the difference is very noticeable.

then the limbsaver would make felt recoil drop too.

i have the brake and the mgi buffer on my stock a2 and last weekend i through about 7 boxes of factory 325gr hp and it was pretty pleasant.

i am going to install a extra ace m4 socom stock that i have laying around and maybe look for this +10 spring everyone is talking about.  then it would probably be super fun to shoot then.

I run an ARF-X stock with 1" recoil pad installed, MGI buffer and +10 spring along with Tromix's A1-style flash hider.

Last range session was 150 rounds of 335 grain handloads; recoil was like a heavy .30-06 load- stout, but not unpleasant.

The flash hider was the icing on the cake... after installation, recoil was noticably more pleasant.

Who carries the Limbsaver?  Haven't seen anybody carrying it.  Is it that much better than the other recoil pads?

Advanced Long Range Systems has a nice looking recoil pad that they are developing for use with their 50BMG uppers that should work nicely.

Did it myself, it is a Limbsaver grind to fit pad. Had to trim the buttstock down a little and relocate the lower butt screw. Also had to grind off the small portion of the buttstock spacer. The pad still needs to be trimmed a little, next one will be better.

I'm currently considering the 50B for the same NVP application - Northeastern Venison Procurement. I thought I read somewhere that some folks used a 9mm steel buffer (a lot cheaper) w/ a 10+ spring with notable success. Be darned if I can recall where I read that?? Anyone wishing to give me a gut-check on that, feel free.

For you folks who have hunted with one, how impacting has the recoil been on follow-up shots?

I just got my Beowulf and since the NY weather is against me ....I haven't had the chance to fire it yet.....would you say that the recoil is similar to a 12 Gauge shotgun.....more .....less...

thanks....

I just shot mine this weekend for the first time.  I would say the recoil is about the same as a gas operated 12 GA with 2 3/4" ammo.  I managed to knock the 12" 300 yard gong off of its hanger with a single hit after burning up a couple of rounds figuring out the necessary hold over.

Read the information on recoil that I posted here: Big Bore Recoil Post about 3/4 the way down on page 1

Even before I added the recoil management stuff, follow up shots weren't an issue. I found them to be on a par with a 12 ga. shotgun with slugs. This is important when hunting feral hogs as they can be downright unpleasant after being shot and some of the bigger critters can soak up bullets like a sponge.
Fortunately, the Beowulf hits so damn hard, follow up shots are rarely needed- provided I do my part, of course.

I agree with you....just on a side note, dont use the 334 JHP's since they dont hold up at all.  I believe that the reasson for this is that most of the bullets for the beowulf are made for handguns...it would be nice if they would make something along the lines of a triple shock

Thanks for the input fellas. About the 9mm buffer... any experiences using such a set-up out there??

Was surfing Barnes and found this: www.barnesbullets.com/prodxpb-pistol.php

There are three .500 dia X bullets new for '05 (pistol design)  @ 275gr, 325gr, and 375gr. Would these work with the Wulf?? Granted they don't have the gas checks of the Triple X, but they are an X bullet. If these work in the Wulf and perform like any rifle-caliber, X bullet I've used, that would be some sort of horrendous penetration power!

Beowulf Upper arrived today, I am very excited and cant wait for the sights to arrive. I am going with the GG&G MADD flip up rear and have ordered the Bushmaster flip up front. Anyone else tried the Bushy flip up front sights? I figured that I would give it a try but might have been better off going with GG&G front sight as well.
