| Recently I got bit by the bug to perchase and use firearms. It wasnt a new interest as I had the desire to do so for quite some time it was just that I had not pursued it except to buy a Ruger 10/22 and even at that I did not use it too much. I bought some magazines and started to do some reading then I talked to a friend who hunts very frequently he suggested I get a bolt action in .300 ish caliber. While researching I came across an article on the Steyr Scout to me it seemed to be then gun I should prurchase. I was pretty much decided on getting it then buying a shotgun and later building an AR. While looking through this website I entertained the thought of first getting an ar variant and then going from there. So my question is, is this a good idea to get an ar variant maybe the grendel or should I get the Steyr and go about doing it that way? Thanks |

I am a long time hunter and just purchased a variant (Bushmaster .308) for hunting. I should have it all set up by the time hunting season rolls around this fall. some of the things I ran into while doing research. DPMS makes .308 and a 300 SAUM DPMS inc 308 series DSA makes .308 DSA Barrett makes 6.5 Rem SPC Barrett rifles Alexander arms has .50 and grendel Alexader arms Bushmaster has a .308 bushmaster .308 Armalite has .308 armalite It all depends on what you want to shoot, shooting conditions, how far you will be shooting, upgrades you want to do, money you want to spend, etc... You have a lot of options out there. Do the research and find whats right for you. I highly suggest spending some time in the Industry forum and see the compliments and complaints on the different brands, this might help you decide what is important to you. Hope this helps |
| Welcome to shooting and hunting. I have been doing both with great enjoyment for many years. You didn't mention a budget, so I will give you a few ideas. Savage with accutrigger in 308 with a ken farrell base and burris signature rings topped off with a leupold 3.5X10X40 (the tactical with target knobs if possible. This is about $1000 and many shoot 1000yds with this setup. the scope will last (has a lifetime guar) and has great low light ability for hunting. #2 A bushmaster 308 flattop with the same everything else (minus the Ken Farrell base plus a 5 round hunting mag (it comes with 20rd mag) total $2200. Get some ammo and have a great time. If, these $ are to much for starting out get one of the "package" deals at wally world for sub $400. The important thing is to have some fun. Regards |

Well since I own both a Steyr Scout and a BM .308, I'll throw in my two cents, for what it's worth. I assume that budget is not a big concern since the guns you're considering are all top-notch and pricey. It really boils down to what you want to do with what you buy. If you plan to hunt medium to large game with your friend and not do much plinking or target shooting, then the Steyr is a nice choice. It has some nifty options such as the integral bipod, accessory rail, 10-round box mag, picatinny rail, etc. It is both accurate and light, but really doesn't make a good plinking/target gun because of the recoil. The recoil isn't punishing, but you wouldn't want to spend all day at the range with it. The AR in .308 on the other hand, is a different story. I only have a few hundred rounds at the range through it, but it is a real pleasure to shoot. Low recoil, very accurate, semi-auto, and very easy customize to your liking (admittedly limited with Bushmaster .308 for now). As far as hunting goes, I probably wouldn't use it only because I have other choices. You'd be better off with the opinions of people who hunt with a .308 AR. Now I should mention that I varmint hunt with a .223 AR so its not like I have a bias against using an AR-style gun for hunting. From what you wrote it sounds like you will eventually be buying both, so here's my opinion: buy the AR first. You won't really be giving anything up and you can entertain yourself by customizing your AR while you are saving up for the Steyr. |
| See what I planned to intially do was to get a Steyr Scout and a Beretta Extrema at the same time and then maybe get an AR lower to start a build but now I think I will buy a Steyr Scout and start the AR build at the same time and to buy either a cheaper shotgun or purchase one at a later time. The problem I have now is should I get say the Pof Usa piston upper or a grendel. |
