I snagged a pretty good deal on an AR today, which has a Troy TRX Extreme Battlerail.  Once I got the rifle home, I noticed that the rail on the forend is not lined up correctly with the receiver.  Its canted enough that its clearly noticeable, but seated against the indexing notch.

Here are a few pics:

Is this a barrel nut issue, or something else?

Installation error.

Not a big deal to fix, loosen the mounting bolts, and when you retighten them, you need to put pressure in the right direction. Or use an optic mount to bridge the gap while you tighten, and it will keep it straight.

Oh, and in before someone claims it's not a real Troy rail because of the older style mounting.

And in before "fuck troy".

Makes sense...but what is the point of the indexing notch, if it doesn't actually index the rail?

You just need to loosen those two screws at the bottom, straighten the rail and tighten the compression screws at the bottom.  You can only tighten them one way though, not from the left or right.

OP.... The alignment tabs/ tab is there to get you close to alignment or keep the handguard from twisting and coming loose on some handguards.

Different brands of uppers are going to index differently, they're not consistent. I've run into the same thing.

as said above crappy installation or it rotated a little after installation which can and does happen with the less than world class handguard design.  rail attachment to the barrel nut allows for some side to side possible rotation.

Well, fix was easy enough....I just thought the tab was supposed to be in contact with the receiver.  Its lined up now, lets see if it stays that way!
