Hi Friends,
I'm a relatively new AR-15 enthusiast. I've learned a lot, but I have a question regarding a Bushmaster X-15 E2S I bought online a couple of months ago. The markings on the barrel are as follows: BFI 5.56 NATO 1/8. I know what everything means except "BFI". Can anyone tell me what the "BFI" stands for, and perhaps what type of barrel this is (chrome-lined, etc.) Any help would be greatly appreciated. And, thanks for having this very good forum available to those of us who are learning and want to do things right. "Peace Through Superior Firepower". - SH |
| Thanks for the fast reply. This rifle also has the low-profile gas block instead of the standard A2 sight/gas block, which I thought was unusual. The Bushmaster user manual doesn't even show this variant (unless I'm missing it). I just want to make sure I don't have a lousy rifle in my hands. At least I know what "BFI" means. The rifle shoots just fine, but I've had to make some mods to it, to accommodate a front sight. Thank you very much! |
| Thanks for the quick reply. Now I know what "BFI" means. A lot of these are listed with a 1/9 twist, but this is 1/8, and also has the low-profile gas block instead of the A2 gas block/sight. So I may do additional work on it for my uses. Your help is appreciated! |

Additionally, I wanted to make sure my barrel isn't a piece of junk. It's so hard to find good information on these. I am sure the barrel is quite serviceable. 1/8 is a common target rifle twist. It will stabilize pretty much any common bullet weight. If you bought this used, a previous owner may have modified the gas block. Regardless, shoot the gun, seek training, practice effectively, rinse, repeat and work on becoming a true Rifleman. I highly suggest attending an Appleseed event. |

Hi Makarov,
Thanks for the additional information. This rifle was purchased new via Gun Broker. The lower shows it to be an XM-15 E2S, however what I've found online about this model is that it usually comes with the A2 front sight post rather than the low-pro gas block. And the barrel on the E2S is usually 1/9. So it's a little weird. I've test fired it, and it seems fine. I made enough mods to it so as to get a proper front iron sight mounted, since it came with only the carry handle rear sight. I'll take it out again and run it through some trials with the new furniture. Your other advice is very apt, and sound. The goal is to get to know this platform, and all its variants, very well... and to become proficient. I thank you very much Sir. |
