So I got a PWS 12'' keymod handguard to upgrade my good old MT6601...
it starded as a M16A2 clone then became an A4 clone and now I wanted something more DMR-ish.
the gas block is on the way... for now I'll keep the standard FSB.

the handguard is really nice and easy to install, I also like the keymod idea but once I mated the upper to the lower receiver I found out that I can not pivot open the rifle anymore because the bottom of the handguard is interfering with the lower receiver....

is this a common issue with this kind of handguards? do other brands have the same issue? what about the Geissele SMR?

the lower in the pics is an A2 type.. I didnt try with an A1 and A4 type yet.

New guy here but ive spent a large chunk of my life around metal. It looks as though you can slim the width with a file & then just touch it up.  If its the harsh edge giving a problem just put a chamfer on it with a file & you'll be gtg.

I know you shouldnt have to modify new gear to make it work but sometimes thats just how it goes, especially with aftermarket parts

That is odd. Were any spacers included with the barrel nut? I would hypothesize that may be the issue, but if timing your barrel nut wasn't an issue I would also hazard a guess that it should work without spacers. Good looking rail though!

I'd just file the bottom of the handguard down to make room for it to work with the lower. (get some birchwood casey aluminum black to blacken it back out when you're done with the file)
unless you paid primo coin for the handguard (in which case I'd send it back and buy something different).

if you take your time and use hand tools (not a dremel), you can achieve the look and functionality you want.

eta, I looked up the handguard.. send it back for that price, don't go cutting on it.

I've never handled a handguard that didn't allow the gun to pivot.

The Geissele SMR allows the gun to pivot.

I have one just like it and it pivots just fine. Are you sure something else is is not causing a problem?

On second look, is that a colt large hole upper? The picture of the front lug looks really funky. If that is the case than I can see why it will not pivot.

I suggest getting something like a KMR-13.

nah it's a small hole receiver.
but I think there's too much material in the front side of the pivot pin lugs... I'm at work now but I'll give a second look asap.
if this is the case then I could just file the rear of the handguard and fix the issue.

little update.. the issue is definitely the A2 lower...
actually the lower is ok (it's a colt! ) but the rail is not compatible with the A2 forging... it works perfectly on my A1 and A4 lower.
sorry for the crappy pics
