I've been out of loop for a while. Can someone explain the mechanics/benefits of a Keymod rail vs. an old school picatiny?

Gracias.

Thinner profile and you only have to put rails on the section you are attaching something to.  Other than that, it is the same to me.

It allows you to place a rail only where you want it / need it instead of having a full quad rail. It also allows you to attach stuff directly to the hand guard with out a rail.  M lock is the other style with the same principle.
