New to the site, and also fairly new to ARs but have been shooting handguns for a couple years. After shooting a friend's, I decided I needed an AR. I looked at a lot of off the shelf ones, and decided I'd be better off building one and getting what I want from the beginning. I'm fairly mechanically inclined and love learned new stuff anyways. So I did a lot of research and have either got all my parts ordered or decided on... except the barrel.
I just don't know what I want or need out of a barrel. The gun is mostly going to be used at the range, probably out to 100 yards. It may be used for a carbine class later on, and possibly some run and gun type stuff. I don't need to put bullets through the same hole. I don't really know if I want a LW barrel or government profile, stainless or CMV, CHF necessary/beneficial? I do know I want to go with a 16" mid gas. I always hear DD makes great barrels, but then do I go LW or Gov.? What about something like the Mega 16" Stainless? Spike's 16" CHF? The pinned gas block is nice, but then again I live about 15min from ADCO if I need anything like that done. Advice and recommendations welcome. My budget for the barrel is around $275, without gas block or tube. |

Got a buddy that has a couple Green Mountains. They seem to be pretty good. Not the only choice but a personal favorite of mine for building Shtf or high work load guns is FN CHF barrels. Included in the lineup PSA, Spikes, Rainier Mountain, and a couple others. The FN CHF barrel blanks have an extra thick chrome lining. They are very accurate, and they last. I prefer the CHF barrels. Some maintain there is no benefit. From my shooting and comparison, I maintain there is benefit when dealing with heat build up. There are some options, and you would do fine with any barrel listed in this post. And Yes, the DD barrels are quite good too. Edit: just saw your spikes link, I think that is the deal on the internet right now. Spikes(FN) CHF barrel with a pinned gas block for $249. Just helped another buddy build his rifle with this barrel. It shoots really tight.

Thanks for the input so far. I'll look at the Green Mountain barrels.

I've looked around and can't find that barrel for that price, even without the gas block. Even when I factor in tax from AIM, it's cheaper or about the same. I'm seriously considering this barrel at the moment. That bit of saved cash would let me go with the Raptor charging handle over a BCM one. |

Thanks for the input so far. I'll look at the Green Mountain barrels. Do it! It's a fine choice. I personally prefer to have a pinned block. If it will leave you enough cash to get a raptor instead of a bcm then even better! I procrastinated for a long time about upgrading my bcm to a raptor but damn is it better in every respect. The bcm ch is a night and day improvement over a milspec handle. However the raptor is the same in regards to the bcm. Quoted: Thanks again for the feedback on my options. The current sale on the Raptor CH at DSG prompted me to order that as well as the Spike's CHF w/ gas block. Getting so close to finishing my first rifle!! |
