| I am looking to build my first AR15, so I want to go with a complete upper. I'm looking for a 20" (or longer) rifle length upper with an adjustable gas block, but can't find anything. Does anyone know if anyone sells such a thing? Chambered in 223/5.56. |

But you will probably have to have the upper custom built more likely than not. |

I want to build a low recoiling rifle, and I hear that adjustable gas blocks can help a lot in that regard. Lightweight isn't my goal, this is a range gun so I don't mind it being heavy - but lightweight bcg/buffer weight with a tuned gas system makes for very little recoil.
If it's that hard to find a complete upper with one, maybe I'll reconsider or put one on myself later. Just thought it would be nice to have. |

The lightweight BCG I mentioned was for the light recoil you are desiring. Just wanted to make sure we were on the same page. Rifle length in a 20" would be the smoothest you could get in a standard set up, so choking back the gas would require you to get a light BCG, spring and buffer. I am not aware of any that sell this set up retail, but you could certainly have ADCO set you one up. Those guys are top notch, and will build you an upper. |
| If you want low recoil, check out running a Muzzle brake with a Buffer Tech Hydraulic buffer. Just tried out that combo today on a 7.5lb carbine and it was crazy good. On a 20" rifle with a rifle length gas system the recoil should be practically nothing at all. I am not a huge fan of messing with the gas settings unless the gun as problems cycling or is running suppressed 100% of the time. Many ways to kill the recoil with out F'ing with the gas system too much. |

One of the reasons I'm so paranoid about recoil is my friend recently built an AR15. Nothing fancy, I don't know the exact specs but for some reason it kicks so hard you could fool most people into thinking it was shooting 308 (I've shot a SCAR-H before, it's pretty close). I'm not sure what's wrong with his gun, but it shouldn't be that hard to build an AR15 that has reasonable or even light recoil. I want as many options as I can have available to me, adjustable gas block being one. However, since it doesn't seem likely I can get a complete upper with one, I think I'll just buy the upper I want and swap the gas block if I need it. Gas block installation doesn't look that hard.
As for things like hydraulic buffers, I'd rather not get one for my first rifle. I want to keep it simple. Maybe I'll try one out after I've had the gun for a while. I also don't like muzzle brakes because they disturb people next to you at the range, but I am thinking about getting a suppressor for it down the road, which I know reduces recoil a little. |
