I need to keep a notebook!  Couldn't remember if the stainless bull-barreled upper that I made about 10 years ago was chambered for ".223 Remington", 5.56NATO, or if I had had a stroke of genius way-back-when and bought a .223 Wylde.

Turns out it's .223 Wylde, with 1:8 twist rate, and the "S" is for stainless, at least according to one reference.

Well, since I had to remove the free-float hand guard (plain-Jane black aluminum tube) to get all the way to the damn markings (way up near the chamber), I decided to upgrade to a 15-inch Midwest Industries quad rail, and a low-profile gas block.

Well, it ain't that damn simple.  The barrel has 3 stepped diameters:  0.936 out at the muzzle, 0.950 @ the gas port, and a full 1.00 from the gas port back to the chamber.  Yeah.  It weighs a ton, AND the gun-part-internet guru couldn't find a low-pro block with a 0.95 inner diameter......Why would they do such a thing?

So, I'm having them lathe that 2nd shoulder down to 0.936.

Curiosity's expensive.

*Billy May voice on* "I SAID.... CURIOSITY'S EXPENSIVE!!"    hahahahaha *BMv off*

Actually, somebody had posted the markings question here on ar15.com several years ago, and the answer was in "archives".   Somebody else on this forum has the same barrel as me, and posted a pic.  Somebody else answered it.  Only difference is that my barrel's not a 20-inch.  just posting for benefit of any other who might have similar question
