Brand and model of upper and free float rail, please.  Photos would be helpful.  Standard barrel nut or proprietary?

don't know how to post a pic but its standard. I know troy uses the same and yankee does as well. its a standard with a jammer ring

No barrel nut should interfere with the pivot pin.
Under the circumstances a picture or two is going to be essential.
YHM uses a proprietary nut.

All I need is 1/18th of an inch for the pivot to slide in. Its really that small of a difference

This is not the standard USGI steel barrel nut.
I have installed several of the pictured nuts and have never had a problem like you are describing.
Post some pictures of your actual setup.

I just screwed a YHM barrel nut onto an upper as far as it would go without a barrel and it does not interfere with the pivot pin.
With a barrel in place it could not even get close.
So again post pictures or better yet go to your hometown forum and find someone who knows what they are doing to help in person.
