| I bought a hand guard that has two groves that fit into the slots on the barrel nut. The hand guard has scope mount ribs on top. I mounted the front iron sight on it, but it leans to the left when aiming. At 25 yards the rounds hit about 6" to the left of where I'm aiming. At 100 yards, it is useless. I finally figured out that the barrel nut is not turned to the right enough, therefore the top of the hand guard is slightly to the left. I don't have a barrel nut wrench yet, but have ordered one. However, I was noticing that if I turn the barrel nut to the right, it may not move due to the gas tube going through a hole in the upper receiver. I'm wondering if by turning the nut, it will damage the tube? Suggestions would be appreciated. |

yes, you may damage the tube, or atleast turn the angle of the gas tube so that your gas key is in BCG will not fit over smoothly, which also creates a problem.
Now, front site on rail not being aligned to POI is not uncommon. many (even quailty handguard) will have alignment problems |

Some hand guards permit fine-tuning by loosening & tightening, and depending on what you have, you may be able to fix the problem without changing the indexing of the BN. Also, you will need an upper receiver vise block and vise to do *anything* with the nut (or a barrel extension torque tool and armorer's wrench). Post a picture of the hand guard so we can point you in the right direction. |

When the front sight leans left, the shot will be thrown to the right, because you have to swing the barrel to the right to get the sight post on the target. If you back off the barrel nut to straighten the front sight, your shots should go even more to the left. You need to find somebody that has built uppers before and will rebuild it for you. Something is very wrong with that build. |

Get the TM which is available on this site read the sections pertaining to barrel installation and sight alignment. When you have time read the whole thing. TM9 procedure would be useful if he had a GI FSB, but his post said the new guard has a rail and he mounted the "iron" to that. |

The TM is a good starting place to pick up AR101 basics. |

If your gas tube is centered in the slot of the barrel nut, the problem is not the barrel nut, it is the handguard. |
