Couple 's about AR Performance barrels for y'all.  So I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with this AR Performance barrel.  16", 1-8, Melonite coated, Middy.  My first question comes from my interest in this SOCOM barrel.  Does the different threading for the muzzle device really make that big of a difference?

Assuming it's worth the upgrade to the SOCOM barrel my next question is as follows.  I was planning on picking up a Lantac Dragon for my muzzle device, but they don't make a 5.56 version in 5/8-24 thread pitch.  They do however make the 7.62 version in that thread pitch.  I think you can probably see where my next question is coming.  Does the Dragon lose all its benefit if I fire a 5.56 caliber round through it?  I'm not super familiar with how the dimensions work on a thread pitch, but by looking at the numbers it seems possible to be able to get a 1/2-28 5.56 Dragon re-tapped to 5/8-24, is this correct?

Lastly, any of you out there familiar with the Eliminator Competition Brake from ARP?  I haven't found anything out there on it, so if anyone can vouch for it being a good brake I could always just go that route.

If it's pertinent info, the intended purpose of the rifle this is gonna go on is for 3-gun and range shooting.

There barrels have a very good reputation, although I have no personal experience with them.  Most everyone uses one of the 308 comps or flash hiders on these because of the 5/8-24 pitch, the larger hole in the center doesn't make a big difference in performance, most 5.56 brakes have oversized holes already.  The Lantac doesn't really perform any better than the $20 3 port brakes on the market, they are very good at making marketing videos.

Can't speak to those specific barrels. But I have purchased several 6.8 and 7.62x39 ARP barrels, over the years. All of them have been flawless tack-shooters.

Regarding the brakes... really, I can barely tell with 5.56 out of a 16" barrel. There's just not enough kick from that round for me to notice any small deviations with. Moving up to... say .308, I begin to notice.  YMMV.

I can speak to this exact barrel, I have two.  I also have one of the their 6.8 target crowns.  ARP barrels are excellent.  What more to say.  The $210 for this barrel is a bargain.  The profile is one that I like.  I think you want more mass by the chamber as opposed to the nose.  It helps absorb heat in my opinion.  Again I have two and would/will buy more as need arises.  Their bolt has performed great for me so far, also.

I cannot speak to the muzzle devices.  I have a .308 birdcage on mine.  It works fine.  Good luck.

Edit: I will leave my original post.  I am not sure why but I thought I was looking at the regular socom profile.  I do not own the lightweight or the fluted.  I highly recommend the regular socom profile.  I know where you can pick up a regular socom profile if you PM I will let you know.  I prefer the socom as stated above.

I have 3 ARP barrels, all excellent shooters.

I have the 5.56 barrel with the 5/8-24 muzzle threading.
I needed it for my suppressor mount so I could swap my can from my 6.8 to a 5.56 rifle.

Awesome, good info guys, thanks.  I'll check into other muzzle devices as well then.  Good to know my options are opened up with the 7.62 brakes.
