Sorry, couldn’t find an intro section so here’s a little bit about me. I transitioned starting with a cork gun at 4, then BB gun, pump 20mm Sheridan pellet gun, Ruger 22 auto, 38/357 revolvers, 44 Ruger mag, 45 ACP, and tons of different guns through the years. Started reloading w/RCBS Partner then quickly bought a Dillon RL550B in “82”. Dillon has been a dream and easily produced sub <1” .308 @ 100 yds. Thought I was pretty good until my wife picked up a rifle for the first time and shot a <1” group also and many more.
Right now I have a high degree interest in M4’s. I don’t really know AR-15’s very well but I looking at a Colt M4 6920 for $1300.00. Sounds way high but a few years ago it was just a dream to own such a fine firearm. Should I just waste a couple hundred and buy the guy that’s likely to disappear once again? Should I search until I can find an accurized one? Heard Colt makes a model for it. Are there other Colt models that are superior to the 6920. Are there other brands that are superior to Colts. If so who and what model. I’m kind of partial to Colts as everyone I ever one was first rate and they seem to appreciate better than other brands. Thanks!! Sorry for the long read. |

I'll try to be succinct:
- A 6920 is generally going to be your baseline AR-15 from which all other ARs are measured against (both up and down in quality and features). Colt is the owner of the original Armalite design files and anything they build is therein the spec. - $1300 is a high water mark for a NEW 6920 but within range. Depending on regionally and what variant of 6920, you may find them for a bit less and just slightly more. - Is there anything better from Colt? Yes. Colt produces a marksmen version of the 6920 and a gas piston version (6930) I believe. - Are there better rifles than a 6920? That depends on your intended use. There certainly are more expensive rifles. There are also more precise rifles. Better fit and finish. More refinement. Build to order customization till your heart (or wallet's) content. If you want to start considering rifles upmarket from Colt the Big-5 Premium brands who play in the AR space are: Noveske, LWRC, Patriot Ordinance, Primary Weapons System, and H&K. The next pricing level below this would be brands like Spikes Tactical, Bravo Company, ADCO .. Then Colt and probably Ruger I would put in the same space. ...then you have your entry level brands. DPMS, Rock River, Bushmaster. |

You should be able to pick up a 6920LE for around $1K at Walmart. Are there comparable others for less? Yes, you could get a Spikes, PSA, Stag, etc... in the $850 range, but the name brand of the Colt is worth a premium at resale. No one ever sells ARs though... |

Thanks so much for the help guys. I see that the $1300 price level for a 6920 is too high and I should be able to do better. I'm retired and income is very limited but I would prefer to spend more now and get one that I will still be happy with a few years down the road. Are any of these short barreled Colts or others brands considered high accuracy firearms, <1" @ 100 yds? Can they be found in heavy barrel versions and would that be desirable in a short barrel versions weapon or just unnecessary weight?
Thanks, Anderstat |

Thanks, Anderstat Accuracy doesn't depend on barrel length, so you can have a relatively short barrel that's very accurate. It will depend on the quality of the barrel/ammo/shooter. I don't know where you are in Texas, but GT usually has some good prices on Colts. https://www.gtdist.com/ProductDetail.aspx?PartNumber=COLT-LE6920 |

There are two Colt (maybe more if you include the Colt Competition Rifles) carbine models that are capable of under 1" at 100yd (or 1 MOA) accuracy, the 6721 with HBAR (heavy profile barrel under the handguards) and the 6920 SOCOM with it's medium-heavy profile barrel under the handguards.
The 6920 SOCOM are more expensive around under $1,500 and the 6721 are around between $1,000 to $1,100, and I'll post links or address below for dealers that sells them. The 6920 standard government profile barrels usually won't be under 1 MOA but just slightly larger than 1 MOA. You have to determine and decide what you want to do with your AR, for a defensive carbine the LE6920 is a good choice but if you want under 1 MOA accuracy those are usually used for target and competition shooting, Colt also have their guaranteed under 1 MOA Competition Rifles series but are more expensive than production models. Here are some documented threads about the best grouping of the 6721 HBAR heavy barrel and the SOCOM 14.5" barrel (which would be similar to the 6920 SOCOM 16" barrel), reference thread links below.
