that doesn't match my lower, is there anything I can do to change the finish or should I just return it for something else?

FYI: its an AO precision upper from midway, and its got almost a greyish finish to it, especially when put on the DPMS lower I bought. The natural answer would be to buy a DPMS upper but I was hoping to spend under $100 and don't want the slickside receiver. Does YHM or Doublestar match DPMS finish?

Thanks!

It'll be a crapshoot.
Once upon a time ago, I worked for a shop that was producing lowers.  The anodizer they used finishes products for other major manufacturers as well.  I have seen color variances within SAME batches done at the same time.
Your best bet if you want an absolute match is to get all of your parts wherever available, then have them finished at the same time with a coating of your choice (whether that be Krylon, DuraCoat, CeraKote, etc...).
YMMV

I've had good luck with my Vltor Mur's (very grey) by soaking them in CLP for a few days which has darkened them enough to not be so noticeable on my Spikes and Rainier lowers which have deep black anodizing............YMMV
