I am really interested in getting this short throw selector from Battle Arms Development. I seen on their site that these do not work with standard marked lower receivers. They are made for lowers already marked with 45 degree safety/fire markings.

They do say that the safety/pin block device prevents the selector from fitting into standard lower receivers. There are numerous posts from different forums saying that this pin can be grinded down and will fit into a standard receiver.

My question is is there any withdraw in grinding down this pin block on the selector function wise? Or does the pin block serve any purpose other than prevention of installation in standard lowers?

I'm interested in picking up this selector and getting used to training with it. Thanks!

Only purpose it serves is to make sur the line points to the right place so you know when its gonna kill something. File it down and enjoy.

Keep in mind that the warranty is void if the pin is ground. Probably won't need it, Battle Arms Development makes awesome stuff, but it's something to keep in mind.

Thanks gents for sharing info and your support!

The "lawyer pin" is an unavoidable (to our legal counsel, and we concur) necessity.  Its only purpose is to bar it from being installed on receivers not marked for 45 degree compatible FIRE engraving position.  A 45/90 compatible receiver will have FIRE or suitable pictogram located at 68 degree, thus either a 45 or 90 degree selector will point to it sufficiently, enough to avoid confusion as to what condition the weapon is in.

The pin itself is pressed in, and made of stainless steel.  We don't recommend nor suggest its removal, as somewhere between SAFE and FIRE doesn't mean safe or fire, for someone unfamiliar with the operation of an AR, this is a problem.  For those of us that have been trained and are safety conscious, it isn't an issue as we go by feel, not by looking at which way the selector's indicator is pointing.  But we can't assume everyone that buys it operates their AR that way.

There are now quite a few 45/90 degree selector compatible receivers, the latest being CMT, Aero Precision, and Midwest Industries.  Spikes Tactical and Seekins will be out soon, as well as our own

It's been three years since its introduction, we're gratified to see that the short throw movement is gaining momentum.  It has never been our intention to replace the 90 degree legacy selector arrangement, we simply want to make the short throw selector a viable option, so folks can decide for themselves which they want to use.  To that end, we don't license the receiver design, we freely give it to manufacturers that asks for it

As to other short throw selectors that do not require a compatible receiver, the only one our legal counsel would be happy with is the Noveske STS.  At 60 degrees, it points close enough to the FIRE engraving to avoid causing confusion.  I'm not a lawyer and can't give legal advice, but I will share the reason behind ours a little further.  Somewhere between SAFE and FIRE is neither SAFE or FIRE, it would not be easy to argue otherwise in front of a judge.  While ATF may be fine with pirate or zombie themed markings, a neither here nor there position, such as a 45 degree selector will point to in the absence of a compatible receiver with proper markings, opens itself to litigation.

The lawyer pin, while inconvenient, makes the selector more time consuming and expensive to make, and limits its wider adoption, is preferable to law suits.  For us, it's either the pin, or no short throw selectors

^^^^^^^^^^ Thanks for the reply BAD

I did see that by "removing" the pin that it would void a warranty, but you guys already have some real solid products so my theory is that I wont have anything to worry about.

I understand the reason for the pin being there, but the 45 degree short throw seemed like a good upgrade to have, along with interchangeable levers. I do agree concerning the safety of others who use their selector by sight rather than feel. I have always used the feel of the direction of the selector to signify safe or fire operation, so this shouldnt be an issue, especially with enough practice of flipping the switch to gain some muscle memory.

Lastly, the ST is a lot cheaper than getting a lower made for the ST. If I got another lower, I'd have another rifle to build!

Thanks again for the help!

The warranty thing, we have to attach a consequence if it is removed, otherwise it could be seen as a nod and wink, as in "we put it there, but you can remove it and we'll look other way", so that can't happen.

Our unofficial life time, unconditional warranty's only exclusion concerns the removal of the short throw selector's pin block.  For us, generosity isn't a personality but a policy, the short throw selector just carries so many potential problems we have to stand firm on policies set forth by our legal counsel

I understand the company's policy completely. I also know the part doesn't cost very much and to me it was totally worth it to grind that pin off. Love the short throw system!

Just buy a Noveske short throw selector kit.  It fits all rifles without any modifications.  It only travels 45 degrees so when in the "fire" position its half way between "safe" and "fire".  See pic below.

So does the battle arms after a super minor operation. To me the Battle arms is the better choice with the variety of levers they have available. Plus that Noveske looks horrible to me. No offence, to each his own. I am in no way knocking your rifle.

Our short throw selector has been 50 degree throw since last year, the 5 degree difference was enough to mitigate the majority of compatibility issues the 45 degree selectors had with some Wilson Combat TTU triggers.

One of these is a 50 degree

Noveske STS is 60 degrees BTW

Don't waste your time with grinding. Vice grips will yank the pin right out.

Also, the ST is awesome.
